Default AMD Processor question

I have an AMD 2500+ Barton Processor now. Someone is selling a AMD Duron D600-AUT1B - 600MHz Socket A Spitfire. Would it be faster than what I have now? I'm having trouble finding a comparison.

Your Barton is considerably faster and more powerful.

Barton = 1.83 GHz

Duron = 600 MHz

Barton = 54.3 milllion transitors

Duron = 25 million transitors

Ok, I thought so; thanks
I'm looking at upgrading to the Athlon XP 3200+. I've been doing some research and it seems to be the faster processor for Socket A machines?

Just one thing to keep in mind. The 3200+ is a 200mhz FSB processor, which means that the RAM and motherboard you're currently using may not work.

I thought it was 400mhz? Which is the max for my MB.

My sources tell me Athlon XP 3200+ is:

Model Number 3200+
Frequency 2200 MHz
L1 Cache Size 128 KB
L2 Cache Size 512 KB
Front side bus 400 MHz
Integer pipelines 3
Floating point pipelines 3
Multimedia instructions 3DNow™ and MMX™
Socket type 462 pin microPGA, Socket A

My sources to my knowledge have never been wrong, but hey, there is a first for everything.

Yup, I was doing a lot of research on it this morning. There are a few on eBay. They go for around $60. I think that's a worthwhile investment. I've checked the benchmarks over my current 2500+ Barton, and it is a fair bit better.

As well, depending on your MB configuration utility, you can over-clock it very easily for about a 15% gain while only adding +/- (3)1*. If you can over-clock your memory separately (MSI), you can really smoke the benchmark results.

This antiquated rig is a Sempron 2400+ (1.6) over-clocked to 2.2, with the memory tweaked, and the AGP locked. That is something that should not be messed with (AGP), 'some' manufacturers allow the FSB and the AGP to be tweaked. I like MSI's ability to separately tweak just the CPU, or just the memory, or just the FSB, or all simultaneously, all the while the capability to "lock" the AGP port.

CPU pushed from 1.6 to 1.9 clock speed (raw).
FSB pushed from 166 to 197 (first failure is at 199), effectively pushing CPU to 2.2 through FSB clock multiplier.
Memory events tweaked faster by one step each setting.

Runs smooth for hours on end, average CPU temp is 50*C, but AMD runs hotter normally, and I have internal alarm, and extra automatic cooling that kicks in @ 56*C, with manual override if needed. With 3D game running in back ground, streaming audio, and editing video I can push it to 58*C, before the automatic cooling makes you stop or leave the room one. Once the ThermalTake volcano AI takes over, it's time to either stop or vacate the room, unless of course you don't mind experiencing what many have related to as a "727 preparing for take off".

Good luck with your build. The art and lore of home built appears to be fading fast with the onset of budget PCs capable of twice the performance for half the price.

Yep very true. It was fun while it lasted, but more often than not it's simply not practical to even upgrade components anymore, since you can usually get a brand new rig ( and possibly a new and free LCD monitor via special offer!) for a little more.

I currently have an ABIT KV7 MB. I've been very happy with it. I have not done the over clocking yet though. Is that done in the BIOS or on the MB?
