IBM Processor ?

Hi, My friend has an OLD PC that has an IBM processor, but I can't remember the name of it and I'm hoping one of you can help. It's called Cyrux or something like that. Does that sound familiar to anyone here? I'm asking because I need to look to see if I can find a CPU fan for it to keep it all running until she's able to get her student loan check to buy a new puter.
Anyone know the name of the CPU I'm trying to think of? I tried looking at IBM, but I couldn't find anything about the old CPU because it's so old probably, so I'm not sure of the name I need to look for.

Cyrix is a company that folded. Like AMD they made Intel x86 clones. Their latest were 586 and 686 derivitives. Try searching for specs on Pentium 1 CPU slots. That is the form factor they had to fit.

Thanks NS. I just can't get her to understand not to bother doing anything with this PC, that it was given to her for free for a reason.

Any suggestions on what type of CPU fan I should get, I know nothing about these things. Would a Pentium 1 fan work with this Cyrix CPU?

A fan for the origional Pentium form factor might fit, but she is going to a lot of effort to raise a dead machine. The cost she will incur would almost equal getting an econo Dell ($400-$600).

I concurr, why resurect such a machine? Cheaper to just get a barebones sytem with a much newer CPU.

I think there's a mis-understanding, I'm not resurecting anything. The fan is dying, the computer works fine, I'm just looking to repair the fan. She can't get anything else until she gets student loan money sometime around Sept-Oct. I've found some fans on ebay for around 8+shipping.

A standard cheapie pentium I/II fan/heatsink combo should fit. ZIF sockets are all basically the same. Make sure and use heat transfer compound. Cyrix CPU's were pretty low end and tended to run pretty hot.

I believe the fan you need is called a 586 ball fan. The important thing to look for is the power connector to have a molex end on it (ie one that connects to power connecters from the power supply. You may be able to get one at radio shack.

so far as i see it, no one should be using a machine that old. if i were you i would suggest getting a mini-itx machine. very versitle, and above all really cheap. go to www.mini-itx.com . the mobo's have everything on board, can be upto a gig, and are cheap for what they are. she could even keep her hdd (not that she should).

i seem to be the tech support for everyone i know, and even I wouldnt touch a macine that old for fear of it crumbling to dust.
