I have the old version of BG with 5 cds and one cd for TotSC. I did a full install of BG and then installed Sword Coast. Now when I start the game I have no choice between the two, and when I start a new game I need the BG disk and not the TotSC disk. Does the expansion just add new areas to the existing game even when you start a new one? I just want to make sure that I getting the full experience.

yes - two new groups of areas - they're accessible any time during the game but not after the BG1 ending

(although you need access to BG city to do one of the major quests)

Is Durlag's Tower supposed to show up on the map when you install TotSC? I started a new game it's not there, but I know I installed the exspansion correctly.

Not right away--when you start the game, your character only "knows" the locations of the local settlements and major roads. Durlag's Tower isn't exactly a hotbed of agriculture and commerce.

Go to the Nashkel Fair and head east, or alternatively go to Wrym's Crossing (Bridge to BG city) map and head north. If Ulgoth's Beard and/or Durlag's Tower still fail to show up on your map, you'll need to run the program called MCONVERT, which is in your BG directory.
