i have just got the cloak of the wolf cloak and i was just wondering what situation this is useful in and if you have any specail abilities as a wolf, apart from being able to rip thing apart with your claws.

Not really. The Wolf is a decent fighter (the speed helps out a bit), but a 4th-Level-or-higher Fighter is better in his normal form. The Wolf form wears off after 8 hours, so you might give it to a Mage or somebody to use when they run out of spells to use them as a Fighter for the rest of the day, then Rest, and in the morning they're Human (or whatever) again and they have all their spells back.
Apart from that, it's only useful for roleplay value. I found it fun to turn my whole party into Wolves, and then run around BG City doing some shopping and tryin' to get some lovin' in the Undercellar.

I like to use the speed of the wolf to scout new maps. I have two wolves in my party Jaheria with her druid shapechanging skills and Danyheir with the cloak of the wolf. With the two of them I am able to remove the black pretty quick and if they get attacked by something that they can't outrun then the two of them can survive until the cavalry gets there. Jaheria can change back at will and that never hurts.

Its comedy value too, surely? How often do you see "talking" wolves? I ask you, what will they think of next - talking chickens?

I was waiting for someone to mention the chicken. He's a riot. I love comedy relief in games...
