Vithal and Air Elemental...possible spoiler?

In my game, I am always getting all 11 elementals when I come to the portals without Vithal. When I come with Vithal, I get no elementals. Perhaps, this can be caused by the fact that I have already spoken with the merchants and that I have already bought the scroll when I am visiting the portals.

I appreciate all of your responses. I am in Drow form and the Earth and the Fire elementals didn't appear until after we talked to Vitahal at each but when we went to the portal where the Air Elemental is, he's already there when Vitahl and my group walk up. I knew on previous "walk-bys" of all portales the elemtals would pop out so I thought it was strange that there weren't anything there on the first 2 portales. Anyway...I'm happy to hear there is a limit of how many will come out. I can continue to kill them knowing there is an end in sight and then Vithal can go through the portal and come back then I will have completed that task.
