Sure ian, nice idea. And when Bioware make NWN they should realease it for free as well.
Fine in a perfect communism perhaps, but that only works for Insects. In the real world people need money to produce the goods. Granted maybe the musicians dont need quite the money they have, but thats no excuse to go steal it.

andrewas, even though I don't agree with Deathkiller's solutions, it's a known fact that artists hardly make any money out of record sales, only the record companies do. Artists basically earn their living with live performances and record company contracts, using the CD's as promotion material to get more people to buy a ticket to see them in concert.

But don't worry, Gracenote works in a way that it can easily look up all the song titles of a certain CD you're playing in Winamp, so you won't have to enter them manually. And of course, there's always the option to disable that function completely in your Winamp... Just indicate in the preferences that you don't have an Internet connection available, that way Winamp won't try to connect to the Gracenote database to look up the song titles. ![]() I think the particular setting is 'Allow Winamp to report basic, anonymous program usage information'. Funny how it is automatically ticked, and there is no mention of selecting it in the set up. It should be an 'opt in' not an 'opt out' policy if you ask me, I listen to far too much embrassing music ![]()

Winamp is not the only program that uses it, most music players (NOT just MP3 players) do. If your program automatically "reads" your CD and shows the information, it's accessing the CDDB. Most music programs access it, and it IS a convenience. Except for their THEFT of CDDB (along with their other B@STARD corporate partners in crime) there is nothing to worry about. The only data they collect is off of the inquiries to the CDDB. They determine how often a new inquiry came in for the CD over the quoted period of time, and were able to find how many CDs are out there. quoting from the article: Quote:

Thanks Rudey, I didn't read carefully enough to find out this was associated with CDDB. I would still condsider it being on the verge of spyware though - especially as there was no 'turn off' option on installing.

Just following this story up; Found this on the NME website;
EMINEM's new album 'THE EMINEM SHOW' has gone to Number One in the US - on the basis of just one day's sales. The record was moved forward from its June 4 release date, and hit shops on Sunday (May 26). Despite a lack of advertising it sold 284,534 copies on that day alone, according to the Reuters news service. That figure is approximately 100,000 copies ahead that of closest rival P. Diddy's 'We Invented The Remix' album, which is at Number Two. ... It is expected that the album could sell up to a million copies in the coming week. I wonder how much damage the 'unofficially released' copy did after all? ![]()

hehehe I helped shut-down a few bootleggers this week, and if the authorities find a big enough burning operation from the info I gave them and the arrests they made, I could get a $500 reward. Thieves suck.
