AJ, can I take for granted that every expensive book is either a skill-raiser or quest item?

Usually that's the case. Except for some like N'gasta Kwata or something like that, which is worth 200 but useless, or old necromancy books.

However the point is, if you get into a bookshelf, you needn't bother reading all the books, just open the expensive ones. Unless you like reading old (but really well written)morrowind stories, that is...

I assume you're advising this because then you can go over 100 for those skill points? I would disagree. AFAIK there's only 5 books for each skill point in the game. So you would get up to a max of 105 for each skill for this strategy (ignoring other raising techniques). How much difference would that make? Not very much I wouldn't think - if you have a skill at 100 you're pretty much guaranteed to to well with it. But if you're early on in the game, and you don't have a lot of money to spend on training, and you have a minor skill that you're having trouble improving, a book is an immediate point, and a point towards a level up. And non-major/minor skills too, sometimes it's hard to train them, especially if they're very low and your attempts to use them fail often. A few free book points can make a difference

no, this is because when all your major and minor skill is 100. you have no more chance of getting level up. so by only reading books by then, you'll get the chance of getting level ups.

example, max level up is probably lv76. when you read books only after all is 100. you can probably go up to lv80.

hmmm..I wonder if someone will brought up the prison thingie.

And that tactic doesn't work either. I read a book and got "mercantile skill went up to 100" note, but it was 100 long time before.

put your cursor on the level word. you may see numbers there example, 1/10 or 5/10. notice if every major and minor skill is 100. you have no way of making the numbers go up. to make this go up is to read books.

yes, you skill is still 100. but the numbers will go up from 5/10 to 6/10 when you read books and when it is 10/10 you get a level up.

so only read books when you major or minor skill are all 100.

Kakero, I was referring to Aelia's post where she said that skill can be raised to 105 by reading books. And it is not so, at least in my game.
