Having taken well over a year to get this far (I work hard - sob!) I have finally arrived at the great city of Baldurs Gate. I've just finished thieving the sky ship materials and was going back to the gate section when I noticed Ulgoth's Beard marked on my world map. Thsi set me to thinking...

When is the best time to start on the ToTSC quests? Should I finish the main game first or, like Icewind Dale, start the expansion pack stuff before going on to getting involved in the final chapters. I am thinking I must be pretty close to ending (maybe?) so when should I head over there and have a peek?

You will not be able to go back and finish any quests after you finish the main plot/game.

I have yet to beat the game myself but, I think I heard that you cannot go back and do anything after you enter the Theif Maze (or something like that).

It sounds like you are pretty far along in the game so I would recomend that you head over to Ulgoth's Beard and do the quests that you will discover there.

Note: if you think that the game is almost over, you will be in for a shock, as Durlag's Tower (or "basement" as I like to call it) is by itself, about a fourth of the game.

And it's damn fun too!

The Main Plot of the game keeps egging you on: "You must go to Nashkel and investigate the Mines!" "You must exterminate the Bandits!" "You must go to the Cloakwood!" "You must infiltrate the Iron Throne!" It's all bunko. True, you have to move the Main Plot forward if you want to keep accessing the new areas in the game, but there's no rush. Go ahead, take some time off and go do whatever side quests you feel like. There are a few quests that have a time limit (such as the skyship parts), but those are few & far between, and they generally give you *plenty* of warning beforehand.

You can actually do the TotSC quest any time before initiating the final battle. So no worries, I usually do TotSC quest just before entering Baldurs Gate so your probably good to start them now.

Main reason I do them before going just before the city is from a role playing perspective. After doing most of the areas in BG city you are so close to solving the mystery that is almost absurd to wander over to some small town, or go south to some tower which takes months of game time for no apparent reason. On a side note you do have to enter the city to do one quest from TotSC but you will know it when you come to it.

In which case I shall hang back from going into the Iron Throne, finish the small quests I started (telescope) and then get the hell out of there and over to Ulgoth's Beard for some new action.

BTW is is worth putting any of the mods on or should I leave it pure first time round?

I would recommend TotSC adventures at the end to build up you're levels for the last battle. Some of the quests such as the werewolf island and Durlag's Tower are really hard and will boost levels big time.

That's not true. When you win the final battle, the game creates an autosave that is right before your final battle. If you want to continue on with TOSC at this point, you just load that autosave and track back out of the thieves' maze. The game was supposed to automatically teleport you to Ulgarth's Beard when you do this, but it doesn't (at least for me), so you have to tediously head back through the maze and continue on from there. I've just finished all the TOSC quests except for the final battle in Ulgarth's Beard. After that I'm going to head back to the temple to beat up Sarevok one last time, and then it's off to BG2!

I would leave it pure first time around.

I played it twice pure(good and evil) then added a mod on the 3rd time around.

Well... I was mostly right, was I not?

I got that information second-hand from this forum, like I said, I have yet to fully beat the game.

But regardless, thanks for the correction Dobian, I wasn't aware of that 'auto save feature' at the last battle.

My characters 'fled' to Ulgoth's Beard after being chased out of Baldurs Gate by the Guard, just because of a little intermezzo with some of the (now former) leaders of the Iron Throne. My characters hope things have settled down a bit once they return to Baldurs Gate again after having been out 'in the field' for a while.

I know better
