(Warning! This post is littered with spoilers spanning the whole Baldur's Gate series.)
.
.
.
So I finally slogged through Durlag's tower, whomped the demonknight without busting the mirror, and returned the Ulgoth's Beard to deliver hamster justice to Aec'Latec (don't know the spelling, wasn't really concerned about it at the time). Then it was on to the Undercity to fight the new and improved *cough* Sarevok.

My copies of SoA and ToB arrived the next day. If you've been reading the ToB board, you'll know the problems I've been having. So, while I worked those out, I started playing SoA.

Wow.

I mean, WOW.

I wake up to find myself in a cage, being tortured by Chancellor Gorkon for some sadistic purpose. Then Imoen comes to set me free. Not only is my little sister a mageling, but she dyed her hair! Her BG1 picture suited her better, and a fast save and switch of portraits helped me identify the sister I knew. I also set Jaheira and Minsc free. Minsc looks just ducky, but Jaheira? She went from looking capable and powerful to a PlayElf centerfold. Yet another portrait switch. (Not that I can say much; the portrait I picked out for Pirengle back in BG1 turned out to be Skie's.)

Not much else went on, sad to say. A lot of footwork. Pain in the butt dragging my party all over the place just to run one item back to one person. The only fight that gave me problems was against the duregar and their leader, and after two reloads Pirengle got his snazzy mail. Also found out that if Imoen gets knocked anywhere close to death, she'll disappear to the surface. Saves me from hearing her whining, but another pack mul--I mean, fighting character--is always needed in a party such as mine.

I made sure I got everything I wanted out of the dungeon, and as soon as those evil Athkatlian spellcasters took the chancellor and Imoen away, I copied that save game into multiplayer. There! No more pointless tedium of the Irenicus dungeon.

The first thing I noticed about Waukeen's Promenade was that every place was visible. And what about those map markers? I didn't notice those until I got to the Slums, but being able to mark your map is a commodity I wish BG had.

I'm also so used to wandering around and exploring every building and talking to every person, that I solved some quests out of order due to my curiosity. This is how things went:

Quayle's Circus and Aerie: I'm usually the long-winded obfuscator, but when I got to Kalah's first question...I read it through twice, clicked on something, and answered the second and decidedly easier question. Quayle has his circus, and I decided to keep Aerie, figuring I'd find a better mage later before she sponged up too much experience.

the slave trade in the Slums: I went through the Copper Coronet and discovered a hidden door that led me down into the sewers, where I found a kobold shaman with a special staff that creates Goodberries and a freak named Quallo and his "friend," a carrion crawler. I find a staircase and walk smack into a bad situation. A heavy-hitting slaver captain, a priest, and half a dozen slavers, at least. Two reloads later, and I beat it. Then Pirengle has the misfortune of tripping the only dang trap in the place, and croaks. And me without a quicksave! It's only nine reloads later that teaches me to save the game after something major happens. Then I cleared out the rest of the ship then freed Hendak. I think that I did this backwards. Judging by the difficulties in fights, I was supposed to slay the Beastmaster first, then take on the Ship by walking through the outside entrance, but I beat it all the same, didn't I? Course, it didn't hurt that I imported a level 6 character from BG into the game, and picked up another NPC before tackling it...

Anomen: Yep, I managed to find him. Also decided to keep Aerie after talking to Nalia the snotnose. (Heh, like Anomen isn't.) But I'm female, and he's male, and he's the only game-sanctioned romance available to me, so... I almost thought the romance was over at one point when he told me about his cleric days, but he later apologized. Hrmph. A first, I'll bet. I convinced him not to kill the Calishite to avenge Moira, and I think he'll be okay. And he'd better be okay because he has more HP and better saves than my former tank, Minsc.

Baron Ployer, Xzar, and the Harper's Hold: Whilst ransacki--erm, exploring houses, I came across a note about him in a derelict house and some whiny baby mages with mephits. Took the former, slew the latter. Did that before the real quest began. Felt too connect-the-dots for me, but hey, still fun. After the fiasco on the slaver ship, Ployer and the Hold seemed too easy. But in the middle, Jaheira ducks out. "See ya later! Gotta go do official secret hush-hush Harper stuff." "But we were going to do a quest!!!" Ah well. So, I put my intentioned quest aside, and we ended up doing most of another quest without her...

Mae'var: Finally got around to chatting with Bloodscalp, and got into Mae'var's organization. Talked with Howlin' Mad Murdock in the basement. Steal a necklace from an evil cleric? Okay! Off to the Temple District and get several quests. Great. I'm getting a quest from someone after I talked to his boss about another quest, while I'm already doing a quest, and waiting for Jaheira to come back before doing the quest I wanted to do in the first place. Grr... I bring the amulet back to Reg Barclay, and he sends me upstairs to none other than Edwin, who apparently used his new-found position to install some metal in his face. Lovely. Anyway, we're off to go beat up a Cowled Wizard. Several mephits and golems later, he was the one beating up on us. Using a cheese tactic from a BG1 fight with Daerevorn, I send Minsc up to wake him up, and return downstairs to sleep. After eight hours, I can actually hit him with something, but it still takes a couple reloads to bring him down. I return to Edwin. Time to put Aerie to some good use. One ring of human influence and friends spell later, and she's using her feminine wiles to get the necessary papers. Then back to Murdock for one final chore, and I don't kill the guy because I'm rather fond of the Shadow Thieves. And if Bloodscalp wants Barclay to die, so be it.

the Skinner murders: Jaheira's back, so onto the intentioned quest. After doing all but the very end of the Mae'var quest without her, this one is very easy. Got the red herring from Dale about the grey elephant at the circus, but eventually saw the tanner for what he really was. He's gone, nothing doing no more from that.

Now I am stuck. I've gotten ideas on where to go and what to do, but I'm wondering if I'm ready for them. Can someone steer me in the right direction? Where do I go next?

My party consists of Pirengle (level 9/8 ranger/cleric), Anomen (level 9/7 dual-class cleric/fighter), Minsc (level 9 ranger), Jaheira (level 8/10 fighter/druid), Aerie (level 8/9 cleric/mage), and Yoshimo (level 12 bounty hunter). I have ~18K in gold, and have kept most of the +2 enchanted items I've found.

My choices are:
 • Haven't explored the graveyard at all, but all the clues I've found so far suggest that Valen's mistress is a vampire. After spending 4K on restorations, I'm not sure if I can handle that place.
 • The Unseeing Eye still has to be done. I'm not sure what it involves, and nobody's telling me anything except that I must do something about it.
 • Same with the Five Flagons/Haer'Dalis quest.
 • I have enough money to pay off whatshisname about the location of Imoen. Problem is, I think this will end the chapter. Definitely something to save.
 • I've heard stuff about the Umar Hills, but that's outside of the city. Am I ready for that yet?
 • Same with the De'Arnise Keep and Windspear Hills.
I also have a couple questions:
--I can't sell the kobold shaman's staff. Is it worthless, or is it needed for something?
--I'm debating whether or not to kick one of my party members out for Keldorn when and if I find him or going back for Jan Jansen. My party has only one person that doesn't cast cleric spells--Yoshimo. I don't like the choices of spellslingers so far (Nalia and Edwin), and I'm wondering how important the mage spells will be when I have the fighting power of Pirengle, Anomen, and Minsc. I'm sore tempted to swap out Jaheira for Keldorn, but is this necessary?
Minor spoilers welcome, major spoilers not welcome.

Wow! Big read there, but it amused me Nice writing, Pirengle.

So far you've already done quite a lot of quests, not all in the way they were supposed to go (as you implicated the slaver quest was a little bit different). The other quests you've mentioned (Five Flagons Inn, Windspear Hills, Umar Hills) are all quests that can be done now (before you go off saving Imoen). For more spoilerish stuff read below.
To answer your questions:
- The staff is part of a quest in the sewers (involving a +3 Sword, which you might want to get). Go to the sewers to the place where you encountered Quallo, and head north by north east to start the quest. Further explore the sewers to find all the things necessary (watch the mouse pointer for things you can use/change in the area).
- Keldorn is a tank. As you said you already have a couple of tanks (Anomen is not a pure tank though, but can fight quite well). Minsc is a good tank, and Pirengle, your protagonist/ a fighter, is the second tank. IMHO don't get Keldorn, but stick to Jaheira. She has some nice spells (Summon Fire Elemental) which she gets quite early in the game.
If you DO want to get Keldorn, swap him for Minsc. That's what I'd do, as Keldorn is the only one capable of wielding one of the most powerful swords in the game; the Holy Avenger (which is a very good sword, trust me).

SUPER-SPOILER!!!

You can also take on the quests in the Umar Hills (and all other quests you haven't done or encountered yet) when you've saved Imoen.

Do the grave district for extra experience.

A single protection from undead spell used on a tank with a magical weapon is a good bet (you have daystar yet?). Simply send the tank in alone and proceed to whomp on evil

Then send in the thief to collect the treasure.

You also get a couple of amusing subquests.

Personally, I'd take the Keldorn over any character in the game. He has sucky dex and str scores to start out, but once you give him some *minor* equipment, he'll turn into a big powerhouse because he's the only character that can use a certain VERY POWERFUL 2 handed sword later on in the game.

Aside from the fact that Keldorn gets that item, he also has great mage-battling skills, dispel magic and true sight are godsends once you learn how to use them correctly. I wouldn't rely too much on Yoshimo because he will have to leave your party later in chapter 5.

keep in mind that spellcasters start out weaker than fighters, but if you continue on in the game (especially in ToB) they get very strong, very fast. They're disputedly the most powerful class available once you hit the higher levels of 20-30 in ToB.

Right now, I'd suggest giving the money to aid Imoen. This will lead you to the next chapter, but it will also give you easier mini-quests to build experience before you attempt the harder quests. An alternative would be taking Nalia's quest. Nalia herself doesnt have to be in your party for you to do the quest, just talk to her and say you'll accept it and she'll draw on your world map. This quest is low-mid level and you should be able to handle it with little to no trouble. Windspear hills, Umar hills, and Unseeing eye are all tough quests, better saved for level 12-13 characters.

BTW: the shaman's staff is part of the quest in the sewers under the copper coronet; talk to the old man standing next to the neutral carrion crawler and you should learn what's happening, if not; search "lilacor" and you should be able to find some answers.

The graveyard is a fairly safe place, surprisingly. Even at night. No spoiler here, I assume, when I tell you that the only real danger lies in the tombs themselves. There are a few quests to pick up, and if you had *AHEM* or *AHEM* in your party, there'd be a few more character specific quests you could do. And if I remember correctly, the graveyard isn't extremely dangerous, especially for a party like you have. A good bit of experience and a few nice items there.

Any quests outside of the city are worth at least looking into. One of my favorite things about this game is that very FEW quests are time oriented... meaning, you can go and get all the quests you want... and then scroll through your journal and decide which you want to do next. Not that it's the valliant hero way to go about it, but hey, I'm not the valliant hero type. After you find out what each quest is exactly, or at least what they want, you can decide from there if you want to try them or not. And I'm not sure if BG1 was like this or not, having never played it, but in order to leave the city, you need to visit the City GAtes first. I think it's the City Gates anyway... I usually rush right thru that part and forget which map area it is exactly.

Unseeing Eye, if I'm right, IS a bit tougher, depending on how beefy your crew is and how well you can deal with... stuff. if you go looking into that one, just remember what I said the first time I did it... "Well, this isn't so hard after all... hey, what's that? AHHHH" *smoosh*

The kobold's staff is part of a puzzle... look around where you found it, click on some stuff, talk to some... one... read some stuff... you'll figure it out. The clue I'll give you is that everything you need is on the map where you found the staff

I'm sure most people here would tell you to jump right on the De'Arnise Keep quest, since it's decent XP and you get one of many people's favorite weapons there... (hint, it's not a bazooka)

I'm not good at party configurations, since I usually just pick people I like, as opposed to who'd better at what. Could explain why I always get spanked in big fights.

Anyway, I'm tired and that's the best I can do. The H'Dalis quest I only did once, and it was with a monster party that chopped up everything in front of 'em, so I can't judge how hard it would be for you.

Have fun storming the castle!

2 words: TAKE KELDORN!

Also, if you go into Chap. 3, you can still do the quests, as you haven't left anywhere...you just have a new goal in a sense.

The shamans staff is indeed worth something plus its a neat item anyway.
To find out go back to the level you found do a little more exploring. Its well worth it.

The keep quest can be done at your level without too much trouble
Theres also a few items here that should be really helpful for the other quests.

You can also go to umar hills. You don't have to take up the main quest there (as its pretty hard) but theres some minor quests there aswell and decent exp from monters to beef up your party for the other ones. Theres no harm at all in adventuring outside to other areas.

Unseeing Eye quest- Dark, depressing, long and a bit boring IMO. If you hated irenicuss' dungeon just wait till you do this baby
Also, a its pretty hard unless you cheese fight the harder monsters there.
Put this one off for a while. And then, maybe, never do it at all

Five Flagons/Haer'Dalis quest
I wouldnt attempt this one until you do a few of the others aswell.

* Minsc will definitely want to go to the Umar Hills, and he'll make a big stink about it and can leave the party if you don't go. It doesn't have to be right away, though you do sound ready for it. Does Aerie know Breach yet?
* Do not start Chapter 4 without at least one +3 weapon.
* Your Tanking power is quite considerable, but you have only half a Wizard. You might want to reconsider that. Half a Wizard was fine in BG1, but BG2 is where the fireworks begin.
* The Unseeing Eye quest will kick your ass through about 50 Reloads.
* You definitely don't need another Tank, so Tanking power is almost irrelevant--Jaheira and Keldorn are both powerhouses when it comes to disposing of enemy spellcasters, so it's your pick.

An update on my party

(Warning! Contains spoilers!)

My party's come a long way since last I wrote. Here's some of the stuff we've been doing:

Lilarcor: Figured out the puzzle in the sewers. Found the hand and the ring by poking around. (Couldn't BioWare have made the "use" icon different from the "you can't do anything here" icon? Ran into the same problem in the De'Arnise Keep.) It took a bit of tube-poking to slice up Quallo's friend for the blood. "You need to get it from a friend? Am I to slice up one of my party members or someth--aha..." Now I have a nutcase sword for a nutcase ranger. Pity the day when I find a decent +4 sword for Minsc. Or does Lilarcor still talk even if it's not the weapon in use?

Anomen: For a while, I thought everything I did with this romance screwed it up. Now I think I've figured it out. The key is to be understanding, be polite and considerate, and flatter him a lot. And he gave me a flower. ^_^ It's not in my inventory. Maybe it's one of those "dialogue-only" things. Or maybe it's one of those "he's a cheap bastard who just wants in your full plate mail" things. Either way, I'm looking forward to the next rest. Hey, where'd that cheesy saxophone music come from?

The graveyard, take one: Took Dace and 605's advice and explored there. Met Wellyn, talked the thief out of the bear back at the Coronet, and put him back to sleep. Went tomb exploring. I found the spider's nest and the magical door before I was told about it, again, thanks to the fact that I explore all the warfogged map space. That spider statuette has come in VERY handy during battles, especially with the Harpers. The underground crypt where I think the Book of Kaza might have been if I took Keldorn in my party, now, that was a fight. Hey, more undead than vampires can level drain! And are those ghasts? Uh-oh... level drain + hold + skeleton warriors = dead party members. Reload, reload, reload...oh, wait a sec, buff and summon! Still not helping! Reload, reload...doh! How many clerics do I have in my party? Let's see, I'm a cleric, Aerie's a cleric, Anomen's a cleric...and what do clerics do best? Turn undead! Mopped that place up after that.

Harper business: I came upon the Harper building and managed to kick everyone's butt the very first time around. Go me. It might have been that my clerics were snapping up some good level 5 spells and I went on a scroll spending spree for Aerie before this battle. No matter. They're dead, I have their gear (well, have what I want and sold the rest), and now the Harpers are mad at me. I'm a child of Bhaal. I'm turning Jaheira against them. I eat my main course with the salad fork. That type of thing. Jaheira only did some hand-wringing and meek protesting, but I knew the Harpers meant business when we met up with that Harper chick who'll attack no matter what. It wouldn't have been that bad of a fight if we'd been prepared for it! No matter what direction I went, my party always got waylaid, always fought bandits first, then took on Harper chick's party. So here I am, with Minsc taking on 5 bandits at once, while the rest of my party buffs and summons various things. This kicked my butt into 6 reloads. Not the most I've had so far (the Slaver ship had 11 reloads total), but still an annoying fight. Was one of those mages a cleric/mage? Might've explained things.

The graveyard, take two: Turned Bodhi down. Maybe it's because I'm female, but I don't find Bodhi that attractive. She looks snakishly feline and sounds like she has a stuffy nose. No thanks, I think I'll go talk to Aran now...

Mook: Took Aran's offer. The vampire fight on the way to meeting Mook was MUCH harder for me than the vampire fight after meeting Mook. Four reloads after first encountering the bloodsucker, I decided to play a bit unfairly. The fourth reload came after Aerie cast negative plane protection and out came the Cowlies. Great. It's Valeria and the Cowled Magettes! Reload. I sent Pirengle out as bait, woke up Valeria, got her to chase me into the Sea's Bounty. Valeria chases me down the stairs to find a buffed party waiting to beat the snot out of her. Guess what--we're inside! You know what that means...time for some great spells o' Melf. Plus, all the Amnish guards in the Bounty helped me out! I decided to be less of a cheeser when taking out the other two vampires and actually journeyed into the street. I kept them annoyed so well that they didn't cast a single level drain. And it was after this fight I identified the silver amulet and the RoP +2. Dangit.

Jaylos and Caehan: No matter what option I chose, they attacked. I killed them, cast all my vampire buffing spells, and waited. And the contact wasn't even a vampire! Damn...

Radiant Heart: That's Sir Anomen to you, now. I hoped he'd turn into a paladin when all was said and done, but once a fighter/cleric, always a fighter/cleric, I guess. I also beefed myself up for the Anarg Cup Challenge, but that was like using an atom bomb to kill a bunny rabbit. Now I have these spiffy gloves of healing that I of course keep forgetting to use.

the de'Arnise Keep: Again, I thought I'd be walking into a pit of fiery hell. Heck, the Yuan-Ti mage on the second floor gave me more problems than TorGar. (Tolgar? No matter, he's dead.) Meanwhile, it was loot, loot, and more loot! I don't have that many good blunt weapons to go around yet, so I made the golems mad but didn't kill them. Aerie + sanctuary = goodies! I plan to go back and whack them once I've done all that I can do around here. And thanks to the icon problem I had earlier, I was trying to cook up the Flail of Ages and feed it to the Umber Hulks.

Those are my new adventures. My party looks like this:

Pirengle: level 9/9 cleric/ranger, wearing full plate mail, shield amulet, ring of protection +1, the girdle of bluntness, a helmet, large shield +2, and wields her lightning warhammer +2 from BG1 as well as the Flail of Ages. AC -4, 47 HP.
Minsc: level 10 ranger, wearing full plate mail, helm of Balduran, ring of human influence, ring of protection +2, and wields Lilarcor. AC -4, 93 HP.
Anomen: level 11/7 cleric/fighter, wearing plate mail +1, helm of infravision, amulet of power, and his family shield, and wields a mace +2 and the warhammer +1/+4 vs giants. AC 0, 99 HP.
Jaheira: level 9/12 fighter/druid, wearing full plate mail, a helmet, ring of energy, ring of earth control, cape of protection +1, and wields the staff spear +2. AC -4, 75 HP.
Aerie: level 9/10 cleric mage, wearing the same traveler's robe I found her in, plus bracers of defense AC3, the amulet of metaspell influence, small shield +2, ring of air control, ring of wizardry, cape of protection +1, pale green ioun stone, and wields the sling of seeking +2.
Yoshimo: level 13 bounty hunter, wearing shadow armor, bracers of defense AC6 (unnecessary at this point, but thought I'd mention it anyway), boots of stealth, and wields the short sword of backstabbing and the tuligan bow +1.
party goodies: 8 potions of extra healing, 3 potions of healing, a master thievery potion, a potion of defense, a potion of fire resistance, a potion of insight, and an antidote. Also have the silver horn of Valhalla, the Gesen bow shaft, the black spider figurine, the human flesh, and the elven court bow +3.

This is the order I hope to do my next quests:
 • Umar Hills
 • Trademeet
 • Windspear Hills
 • the rescue of Haer'Dalis
 • the Unseeing Eye
 • one more last sweep through Athkatla for any little quests (piece of red cloth, anyone?)
 • the Showdown with Bodhi (tm)
 • and then Aran will help me get Immy back. Yay!
Does this sound like a good gameplan? I'm trying to finish the rest of my homework before diving in and playing again. If I'm about to make a horrible mistake, please hint at it, at least.
minor spoilers welcome ("try looking in this general area for what you seek" or "don't worry to much about that for now" or "it might be a good idea to buy such-and-such before doing that")
major spoilers are NOT welcome--I've been a good little Bhaalspawn and kept my nose out of walkthroughs and spoiler topics at Ironworks. Please don't spoil my fun telling me exactly how to do stuff. Somebody ruined the Windspear Hills quest for me on the PlanetBaldursGate forum when I asked for advice.

Thanks for your consideration--now, back to Waukeen's Promenade for some midnight shopping! I smell a girdle of hill giant strength!

Also, there's another character related quest there... not sure if you know who it is already, but I'm a good little no-spoiler-giver.
