I'm thinking of starting a new game with a thief but can't for the life of me decide which kit is best so I'd like some opinions from people who have played a thief as to which kit is best if any. So which kit assassin, bountyhunter, or swashbuckler?

hmmn ive tried an assassain it wasnt that good, bounty hunters are ok and ive never tried a swashbuckler.it deprends on what ur like i guess. assassains are for if ur a backstabbing nudnik.
swashbucklers are IMO more like a bard fighter thief. and bounty hunters are ok but i normally dual class mine to be a fighter when they get to around level 15-16-but ive only played on the net with these a couple of times Felix |

Swashbuckler all the way. They are almost as good at fighting as Kensai, (mine does around 25 damage each hit) have no penalty to thief skills, and have an AC bonus. The only thing wrong with them is that they cannot backstab, but I never backstab anybody anyway. What could be better than that, I don't know.

Assassin for backstabbing.
Swashbuckler for upfront valiant fighting and some thieving skills. Bounty hunter for the traps.

definately assassin. you can use poison weapon coupled with sling of everard for some heavy punishment from a distance. i really enjoyed sneaking around the game backstabbing and retreating along a line of traps. celestial fury is a lifesaver for the solo assassin, one poison backstab, stunned enemy, retreat and pound with sling of everard (and of course girdle of hill giant strength). oh yeah i used a halfling so the sling thing would make more sense rpg wise

I enjoyed playing as normal Thief, it lets you stay flexible with no penalties to your theif skills (but no bonuses too..) and, like everyone else has mentioned, it all depends on what type of game you play, and how you value combat skills over theif skills.

It takes forever to level a mage up to lvl 16. You've almost completed the game by the time you can use the thieving abilities. I dualclassed my swashbuckler at lvl 11 (he's mage/swashbuckler lvl 11/12 at the moment) but he has an melee AC -7 and ranged -4 (I'm in chapter 2 after restarting when I got stuck in the Illithid Tunnels in the Underdark. Needed a mind flayer to open the door to the master brine but spent my last collar on an Illithid) |
