My friend scares me

I have a very good friend that I talk to through ICQ, she lives in Argentina and I live in Iceland, we met 3 years ago in England and have been talking on the net for about a year now, she is a great friend, funny, sweet, smart and oh so beautyfull... but I found out yesterday that she is a racist. We were talking about the war and she started slagging of islamic people and I asked her why and she said the terrorists were muslims. then I said that not all muslims are terrorists. "no only 99% of them" she said. and got really upset and I ended up kind of agreeing with her even though I know it's not true 'cause I don't really want her to start hating me too.
Or am I wrong and all muslims are potential terrorists. I just can't believe it, there is 1.3 billion of them. Some of them must be good.

I agree with you. The terrorists are actually a rougue faction of the religion. Osadim Ben Laden's terrorists and suiside bombers actually go against the cammands of there religion. Your friend's blaming all Muslim's for what OBL's group has done is like blaming all Christians for what Jim Jones or David Koresh did. One mustn't judge the mean by the variance.

Depends what you mean by 'good' - I find it a pretty meaningless concept. If you mean just ordinary people, living their lives, having babies, working at whatever they do, living, loving, hating, getting frustrated, cooking - yup, I reckon that's most of them.

Living in the UK, I've known a lot of Muslim people, mostly from Pakistan, over the years. I lived in London for a long time, and Luton, both of which have a large Muslim population, both Arab and African. Without exception, I find them to be kind, loving, thoughful and 'ordinary', whatever that means. They seemed to have the same problems, pretty much, as the rest of us. The forms were sometimes different, but the essence the same.

Please tell her that she is mistaken!

She should quantify her racism and say "all Wahabists are potential terrorists". Then she is possessing a racists attitude based on knowledge rather than ignorance.

Yorick? You've used the word 'Wahabists' several times. I have to confess to never having heard it. I don't read newspapers, so have not seen it written - is it pronounced differently than it is spelled? And why are they bad? From what I have found in my copy of The Macmillan Encyclopedia, they seem to be no worse than any other sect of either Islam or Christianity, if rather fundamentally simplistic in their outlook:

Wahhabiyah - A Muslim sect founded by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1691-1787). It stresses the need for a Muslim State based on strict adherance to the literal authority of the Koran and Hadith. It is responsible for the vreation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Saudis are ok with the West, so....?
