"CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian firm said it has launched a line of crisps, packaged with Yasser Arafat's image, to raise money for the Palestinian people and make children aware of their fight for statehood.

The packets containing the crunchy snacks are emblazoned with a drawing of Arafat, wearing his trademark drab olive military uniform and black-and-white checkered headscarf, as he salutes with one hand and clutches a Palestinian flag in the other.

In Arabic, the packet reads "Abu Ammar," Arafat's nom de guerre, and "Hero of the Resistance," with drawings of the snack scattered by the Palestinian leader's feet.

"Hand in hand, we are building our future," the package reads. "The more you buy, the more you build."

The round corn and vegetable oil snacks, produced by the private firm Al-Jawhara and launched on the market several days ago, are flavored with cheese, tomato or paprika.

"It's a message to the children so that they become familiar with the Palestinian cause and the right of Palestinians to live in peace on their land," a company executive, Ali Ghoneim, told AFP.

The proceeds from one of every 25 packets sold, or 25 piasters (about five cents) per packet, will go to the Palestinians, he said without saying which organization would receive the money on the Palestinians behalf."

Interesting. I wonder how they will insure that the money wont be used to sponsor suicide bombers. Im all for them being a sperate state but The isrealis dont seem to be willing to give up "holy land". Time to go read some more news on it.

4% of the proceeds sounds awfuly low to me. And they say their giving the money to palestine, but not WHO in palestine - when your dealing with a group that seems to encourage kids to become suicide bombers, such things matter.

I can see this post turning into a sea of flames. Make sure you (all of you) are on your best behaviour. The SLIGHTEST sign of flamebaiting, flaming or personal abuse (by anyone, be they pro- or anti- Israel, I don't care) and I (or another mod) will be locking it, and we WON'T be happy with whoever did the flaming/flamebaiting.

Go on...surprise me.

WOW !! I need to get my hands on some of them just for the historical aspect of them. In 50 or 60 years when this conflict is long past our children will be learning about it in school. Wouldnt it be interesting to whip out a bag of old chips and tell the kids about what they were used for and why from someone who lived durring the time period?
