I recently bought KOTOR, and had a bear of a time installing it (it kept having missing files, but I fixed that and it installed). I tried to run it, then it kept crashing. I updated my video and sound drivers, and can get it to work now, but I have a weird bug. I turned off the sound to take off components that might be crashing the game (that wasn't it; I had the refresh rate and textures maxed out, and the computer didn't like it). However, I turned the sound back on, but the sound is still missing! Like I stated, I have the newest sound driver, and I rechecked to make sure that I turned it back on. I can play the game without sound (i.e. they have subtitles), but I wanted to hear stuff like blasters and lightsabers to get the full effect. Anyone know what might be causing this?

Also, I have a couple quick questions. Is there any way to move your character around with the mouse? The keyboard methods are tedious in cramped surroundings. Also, what is a good character for a new player to start with. I am currently playing a light side soldier, but he's a bit skimpy on the skill options.

What is your PC specifications? What version of OS are you running on?

You can only move your character with the keyboard. After a while, you will get used to it.

Check out my other posts in the other topic concerning how to build up your character. You might want to pay a visit to gamefaqs for some good playing guides.

No, you can also move with the Right Click to move the sight around and hold the left mouse down to run.

One thing that you could try is making sure that your speakers are turned on and that they're at a normal volume level. Another thing to check is the volume control for the computer. (usually on the taskbar). Failing that, make sure that all of the sound volumes are put back on to max. You might have turned the sound on, but if the volume for the game is non-existant, then there isn't going to be any sound.

Aside from that, I have no idea.

Actually, I received an email back from my video card company (who also puts out the sound card, in this case). They have a specific entry just for KOTOR, stating that there is a problem with it, and they are working on a new driver that will fix the problem. Thus, it is something with my computer (damn eMachines... ). Thank you for your responses on that.

I didn't know about the right click/left click combo to move. I'll have to try that out. I'll also search around here for some posts on character building, but I'll probably stick with the soldier/guardian light side build for the time being. If I don't like it, I'll just change characters, like I did so many times in BG1 and BG2.

EDIT:

I hate this movement!!! It it awful. My guy just keeps standing in place or turning in circles. Why can't I push W and have the guy walk in the direction he is facing? Why do I have to keep fussing with camera angles, just to have my guy stand there regardless of which direction I turn? Even better, why won't they let me just left-click where I want to go, and my guy goes there (NwN did that, and this looks to be using a similar engine)? I spent the past half hour just trying to get into one room of the cantina, switching between characters to try to "unjam" my guys (and reloaded twice, because both characters got "stuck"). I finally shut the damned thing off in frustration. Is there an easier way to move your guy around? I even get stuck trying to talk to people (I try to talk to a specific person, and it "reassigns" my talk attempt on its own to someone else who I just spoke to). The more stuff around in the location, the worse it is. Sorry, I just had to throw that out, as I am just about to shelve this thing if I can't figure out how to just move around.

Oh, I forgot about the right click moving thingy. Anyway, I did try that before and never did like it.

If you get stuck or block by a party member, click select the party member that is blocking your way and have her/him lead the way. This is the only way I know how to get out of "sticky" situation.

I normally used the mouse for direction and "w" for moving forward. Hardly used the other directional control at all. Seems to work better for me.

Apart from the moving and navigation issue, KoTOR isn't a bad game. You just have to get used to it. I hated the keyboard movement and nearly ended the game prematurely, but after giving it a little time and patience, I got used to the control and was hooked to the game.

Actually, I discovered a way around the bug (an annoying way, but a way nonetheless). I tried to play BG2 after I needed a break from trying to get out of the cantina (another half hour of moving, switch characters, moving, etc.). However, BG now had no sound. In fact, the only sounds that came out of anything were the sounds from starting up and shutting down the computer. No other sounds worked.

So, in desperation, I disabled the sound driver, then re-enabled it. Worked like a charm. However, any time I play the game, the sound works until I leave the program. Then it disables the sound again. So each time, I need to disable and re-enable the sound driver. Also, I uninstalled and re-installed the game again (I hadn't done so since I had updated the drivers) and the video works on default levels now. I can even view the movies (which used to crash to desktop). So I deleted my save game and started another soldier. The movies and sound add much to the game (real blaster and lightsaber sounds).

Anyway, I finally got it to work, even if I have to do a tedious step after playing each time...

I used to have this problem before I upgraded my video card, it never made sense becuase the rest of the world although choppy, would still move, but my character would stand still, run in circles, or instantly be on the other side of the map, but now I have a Radeon 9800XT!! Oh yeah, no more problems for me.
