I just recovered the "Lord's Mail" from a guy underneath Ebonheart. Is this a specific quest? I think I have talked to everyone in Ebonheart and although everyone knows about the mail, no one congratulates me for finding it. Even the Imperial Counsillor guy who sets you on the path of it.

Let me know please!
Thanks

Yes it is a quest, when you become Knight Protector, Varrus thingo (in Grand Council Chambers) summons you and gives you the quest to get the Lord's Mail (plus something else). From your post I think you must have just gone and done it from hearing people mention it. It's probably doesn't matter; if you're in the Imperial Legion when you're given the quest you'll have already done it (just make sure you don't lose the mail ).

Is it safe to stash stuff in just about any container? For example upstairs in someone's house? Will the item remain or will it disappear if I leave it in a container?

Any item you put down stays wherever you put it for the whole game. The only thing to worry about is if you put something in a container that is around other people, for example, in a crate in the mages guild - if you try to take it out again they'll think you're stealing. Put stuff on the ground or find an empty house somewhere to stash your stuff

DONT PUT ANYTHING IN THE CONTAINER IN THE MAGES GUILD!!! that container refreshes its contents every few game days making everything reset to the original values... taking away all the stuff you stored.

the best storage location, until you get a house of your own, is to put everything on the floor in the downstairs mages guild (in the room with no people in it) until such time as you get your own house. dont want to waste the time to go about getting a house? simple: complete the fighters guild quest with the pillows (from guild in balmora) and then get reported sucess and get assigned your next quest. go back to the lady with the pillows. kill her. remove all the pillows from her house and put them in the street. store away

or get the Laura Craft Expansion and then you get ur own nice cottage near Vivec along with a grilfriend and a teleport ring that goes to 20 different locations

I think the Hlaaul line of quests gives ur own stronghold eventually.

all the great houses will eventually give you a stronghold. if you join a different house than hlaalu, there is a bug which allows you to join hlaalu as well, making it so you can get two strongholds by stealing a second land deed

Don't just put it in any container you find, you may need to get rid of the contain inside first or else you item will be missing when the game start to clear " visited " chest later.
