Planar predicament

Can you do the planar sphere quest (inc killing Lavok) without valygar in the party? I heard that if you kick him out of your party after opening the door to the sphere that you cannot progress after killing Lavok. Is this true?

This is true.
Actually, you dont even need him alive. If you've agreed to the cowled wizard, to kill Valygar, then you can kill him, take his body, open the door, and go inside.

No, that's not true. On all my runs through the game as a Mage, I've never had Valygar in my party either. I just took him to the Slums to open the door of the Sphere, and the second it was open, I kicked him out again. I was able to do all the quests related to the Sphere just fine without him. So don't worry.

The only thing Valygar is needed for is opening the first door in the Planar Sphere. He's the key, in a very real sense. After it's open, you can drop him or use him, as you prefer. The door remains unlocked, afterwards.

I've heard that you can't get the Planar Sphere as your stronghold (if you're a mage) should you not have Valygar in your party, but that's wrong. I've played mages on three run-throughs, and everytime I dropped Valygar after opening that door. I always got the stronghold.
