Tough question man. The invoker is great, but then they can't cast summoning or enchantment spells. Abjurer might be the best, because their only opposition schools are alteration and illusion. I never play specialists though, because the best thing about a mage is the wide variety of spells they can cast. Take even a few away, and they aren't as useful. The trade off for more spells of one school just ain't worth it, IMHO.

In BG2, fortunately, the rules have been changed a bit. Specialist mages only have one opposition school! So your Invoker can cast anything but Enchantments. Enchantments are cool (the best ones being Greater Malison, Chaos and Emotion) but if you have a back-up mage you'll be fine. (They're all low-level spells, so even a Bard is a good enough back-up mage.)

I tried an Invoker and it was my favorite of the non-Sorcerer magi. I just love those violent attack spells!

My favorite specialist is a Conjurer. His opposition school is Divination, and most Divination-spells are IMO either useless (Identify, Infravision, etc.) or can be cast by Clerics and Druids as well (True Sight). So this doesn't give you a great loss of spells.

If you have ToB however, I would recommend a Wild Mage.

As for a good roll, I take it you mean ability scores. Personally, for any Mage of Sorcerer I try to get 18 on INT and DEX at least. CON above 16 is not necessary, reasonably high WIS is handy for the bonus to lore, and STR and CHA are not really needed.

Has anyone ever tried using the first roll you ever got for a character? I think it would be cool if you decided to be an Invoker or something and then used the first roll you got, just for a challege. Then you'd have to tailor your spells and equipment to cover up your weaknesses..

I did that once, for a Mage in BG1, but that was with a 90-point-total roll. I ended up with STR 14, DEX 18, CON 16, INT 18, WIS 15, CHA 9. If you use the average roll for that, you're indeed in for a challenge.

i competed soa with a halfling swashbuckler with my first roll and with a kensai with the stats edited to 9/3/3/3/3/3... it makes the beginning more difficult but later in the game you hardly notice a difference.

Then your opposition school is illusion, meaning you will miss out on the more powerful and almightyest Project Image.

Do yourself a favour and stay away from these 2 schools, cause imho they are the 2 best.
