You don't have to "use" them or put them anywhere. So long as they're in your inventory they'll work fine. If you're having trouble finding one, or working out which one is for where, check out one of the walkthroughs here or elsewhere.

Ok now that i know i dont have to use them or put them somewhere, where in the goddamn tower do they work because i have walked all over the upper levels of that tower and nothing happens, i have defeated evrything in the upper levels but i cant get into the lower levels. Where do the wardstones get activated at?

When you enter the tower, you can go either stairs up or down. If you go down, you find a little room with some ghasts. There look for a secret door and then the fun starts.

Dont worry about the wardstones, just collect them and they will "work" for themselves. Just explore the WHOLE maps, and kill everything you find and it will be very a funny quest
