Import/Multiplayer Bug! Help!

I have been unable to import most of my characters that I play in single
player. All is fine if I'm starting a completely brand new MP game.
However, if I try to import characters into an existing MP game then the
game crashes. The crash occurs after I've selected the character to import,
selected their appearance and name, and click on the Accept button. At that
point the game critically stops. It drops to my desktop and I see the game
as a black square. I have to end the task to get my machine back alive. I
think it is related to items that I'm carrying, but I can't figure out which
ones. This REALLY sucks since I've been unable to use my cool single player
characters in multiplayer. I used to do this with BG1 and it was great fun.
Help!

BTW: This problem occurred before the BG2 patch was released and it still
occurs after I installed the patch. So the patch didn't address this
problem.

Never heard of that before. Have you tried a reinstallation of the game itself?

i had the same problem with positions 1,2,4,5! so try to put your characters in position 3 and 6 and hope it works.(i dont know if you can go without a char. in position 1).that didnt happened in the start but after my characters had earned some levels,and i imported them without items.
