Hi.

What does it mean when a piece of armor has the rating "special" for encumberance?

This is the case with most "outstanding" stuff, like Samurai Armor and so on.

I am not sure, but I think that 'special' weight class armor, although it adds to total weight carried and can thereby affect encumbrance/initiative/lightning strike etc., it doesn't directly affect lightning strike the way the other weight classes (other than minimal) can.
So, a 'special' weight class armor may not reduce the chance of a lightning strike as much as a light, medium, or heavy weight class armor of the same weight (but its weight still contributes to total weight/encumbrance, so that may lower your chances some).

Most armor is one of the weight classes; Light, Medium, or Heavy, which indicate what character classes can wear them. The pieces which don't fit these--like Sam-only or Bard-only, or like the Brilliant halms which anyone can wear despite their otherwise belonging to the Heavy weight class--are Special.
