I dont play thief much, but i have read that swash bucklers are pretty powerfull. Also if you into backstab, ranger/stalkers have backstab as a kit skill and are ranger in most other aspects, including hidein shadows and move silently, but find traps is a different story. Solo is hard.

I found assassins quite difficult to solo, as their thaco is terrible but they are chosen because they get powerful MUCH later in the game. In ToB they have the ability to use any item, so use that great shield that you wanted.

The thief skills kind of suck as well. You need hide in shadows and move silently to backstab, so spend your points on these. It is quite powerful if you actually hit something. Most fights go like this: go into stealth, then go into area and check out monster formations, pick out dangerous one ie.mages and clerics, get behind them and attack. Then wait and pray the lousy bastard hits something. I believe you start off with a x4 backstab which handles alot of early creatures. If you kill him with one shot, you can go stealth again and never actually appear. I guess they don't notice that carcus on the ground.

The problem is you have a better chance of hitting yourself in the foot then you do of anyone else. Take longswords and sword and shield skills, you get that long+1 in the first dungeon and it helps to get your thaco down to around 20. Ok, just kidding but it's close.

good luck, you are gonna need it.

If you are referring to solo Sorcerers, Melf's Minute Meteors is considered a +5 weapon.

If you have ToB installed, you can gain high-level abilities.

One Comet or Dragon's Breath will kill Kangaxx the Demi-Lich. Hurling Melf's Minute Meteors during a Time Stop is also very good.

Trap problem? There are various counter measures,

Mirror Image, Stoneskin, Spell Immunity, and Spell Trap.

Enemy Mages may have a buttload of spell protections, but you also have a buttload of spell counters. Most Mages cast spell protections that protect against weapons. You are using spells however, so just cast a few Ruby Rays of Reversal/Spellstrikes to strip that Spell Shield and Spell Trap and Spell Turning.
