Ok, so I'm looking at replaying Wiz 7 again, to play through Wiz 8 a second time. I have (somewhere around here) both the original DOS version, and the Windows Wiz Gold version.

Other than the built in map in the Wiz Gold, and the MUCH easier time getting it running, what are the differences between the two?

Not much besides the help within the game, but this spoils much of the fun playing using it. The automap is in reach in the beginning of the game both the original and the dos based.
I did not notice much difference (i played both versions) but the gold versions works in every windows version.
Itīs a great game though and i am still playing it untill my copy of wiz.8 arrives.

Hi Grunthex!

There is a bug in Wiz Gold, that is not in Wiz7 originally: The diplomacy does not work. Wasn't very annyoing for me, but surely depends on your style. Going by boat or a certain part at the beginning is annoying in Wiz Gold, because it is much slower, the message is repeatet every "square" again and your movement pauses for that. But that is something one can get along with...

Never forget your towel, cheers

Hmm, is the diplomacy bug meaning that diplomacy is completely useless, IE doesn't help you talk to NPCs? Or just (I think I read this somewhere) that it doesn't raise as it should?

If it's the first, I'll probably fight for the DOS version. If it just doesn't raise, I'll play the Gold version happily.

I played through it 3x back in the 90s, I shouldn't need the help, just was pointing that out as a difference.

Well, I don't have much experience with this, because I used a walkthrough when I played it the last time, and the years before it I had the DOS version. But the point seems to be that by negotiating with other parties (there are quite a few running around) you won't get them to trade with you, once they refused to do so. This is but essential in some way, since they may have grabbed something before you could and so you are unable to obtain it. Ok, this is only crtical for one item, and usually you get it before all the others. I think...

I found it very playable, and didn't want to switch to the DOS-version due to all other things you have to deal with there. You just won't be able to trade with someone before you did him a favor...

Hope that helps you make your decision, but that's where my knowledge ends. Great game!!!

Never forget your towel, cheers

I had a lot of problems playing through Wiz7 Gold regarding the diplomacy bug.

Had to restart a couple of times even to try different approaches to the Don Barlone who wouldn't do anything but kick me out of his dungeon (he always had the legend map and I couldn't pass through the hall of gorrors). Finally, one a board somewhere, I read how to get around it.

I was lucky enough to have gotten the whole set about 2 years ago. When you run into a problem and need the diplomacy skill, save just before entering negotations with the character, exit Gold and start up Crusaders, load file and negotiate. It will run really slow (at least mine did).

With this switch the Don would trade with me and I was *finally* able to finish the game (I'd tried a few times over the span of about 3 years)
