I always see threads about people going solo in BGII, but rarely here in BGI.

Well, I'm giving it a go, with a Gnome Fighter/Illusionist. I'm just at the entrance to the Nashkell Mine, and I'm doing alright so far. I'm level 4/4.

I did it once with a pure fighter. I planned on dualing to a thief halfway through, although I changed my mind and kept a fighter the whole way. As long as you know where the traps are and know what to use to protect against them (like a potion of absorption for an electrical trap), then you can solo through the game.

Fighter/Mage ought to be able to do a good deal of it, beware of traps though.

You can counter at least some traps with mirror image. BG1 traps may hurt but they are not as harmful as BG2 counterparts.
I have solo'ed a diviner. Great fun. Those cloud kills makes a difference.

I have trouble getting through the game with a full party. My characters just die too easily.

I duo'd it, so I don't think soloing would be that hard. A fighter/mage is a good idea, as is a fighter/theif and a ranger/cleric.

Traps are what worry me. I do NOT think I'll even attempt tackling Durlag's Tower (Although I probably would if I were playing a thief).

now that I think about it, a solo thief could make a great solo, especially if you can get your hands on plenty of potions of invisibility. I think I'll try that next

Try it, its great fun :>

Backstabbing really shines in a solo with a thief.

I'm currently soloing with an "Archer"; a ranger with leather studded, a long bow, long sword, and silver ring...

Challenging, but real fun.
