This may be a stupid question, but how do you use spell books? Have cure poison book and cant use it on any poisoned characters.

Of course, it is NOT stupid question! There is nothing stupid in asking
 Spell book with Cure Poison spell should be used not on the poisoned character, but on the character who knows Vine magic, thus adding this spell to character's own spell book. All spell books you can find in Gael Serran are meant for learning spells, not for casting. So, if you have character with Vine magic skill in your party, give the book to him, right-click on it in the inventiry screen and choose appropriate option ("INVOKE", if I remember correctly).
