When you complete the quest on the ice island you end up with a roll of papers that are the final guys jornal if my memory serves me...do these serve any other purpose other than enriching the history of the game??? A similar question is that with 99% of the books that you find...the exceptions being the tomes, the spell book on the WW island and a few quest related books for various characters...does the information and stories in these books have any usefull purpose other than the noble pursuit of knowledge?

Just backgrounmd info, except for the ones you list. Fun to read, but not useful in any way.

I had heard once that reading a lot of the books scattered over the Sword Coast led to increases in your lore, but I have never tested the theory myself, and I'm not entirely sure if it's true.

A good idea, but not implemented here.

It increases player lore (IE the ability to answer obscure questions in FR trivia quizzes) But has no effect on character lore (the ability to identify items in a glance)

Nonsense I say! Read through all of the books whilst you play, and the next time you start a game, you'll know all of the magical items at a glance. See, your lore skill is raised. j/k

I do believe that a lot of the books are interesting but after a while of reading with no apparent resulting good for my character the novelty has paled...Another book question arises however?

Possible spoiler???

On the werewolf island you obtain that spellbook for that guy who refuses to leave his house...can you get any use out of it before you give it to him?

There are no riddles in BG1 that depend on knowledge of the history of the Realms. While there is one such riddle in BG2, the book with the needed info is suspiciously close at hand.

Baggins, that spellbook is useless.
