Mermaid Murders

I completed the Collasium yesterday, but to do this I had to kill two mermaidens that were blocking the passage to the chest with the second glowstone. I tried everything else, they just wouldn't move, so I eventually resorted to violence. They did not put up much of a fight, and I felt quite bad for a couple of minutes. Was there a way to get around them without killing them?

I used 'Vanish' to teleport them somewhere else. The only use I had for that spell
