I am nearly finished with my current campaign, and am looking for ideas/opinions on a class that is both challenging, and fun to solo with. Logic would say, that a fighter/mage, a fighter/theif, or a fighter/cleric would be the most suitable. However, I want him to be pathetically weak in the beginning, yet still have the capacity to become one mean son of a gun! What I had in mind was a fighter/thief/cleric with the experience cap removed. He would progress slowly, but no slower (I think?) than a party of three single classers. The fighter side of him would take of the dirty work - Gibberlings and such, the thief side would handle the traps and locks, while the cleric side would perform the obvious healing and self-enhancements. I feel that there is a great potential for this sort of character, but since I have never tried soloing, I want your suggestions, preferrably through your own experiences. But any input is welcome.

AHH DAMNIT!
After my last post, I read in the manual that there is no such thing as a fighter/theif/cleric. I'M MAD!

No offense, but who's going to disarm traps, open locks, and heal me if I'm soloing. Bashing locks only goes so far (if you don't cheat), and carrying four groups of five healing potions isn't very practical. Plus, I have already played the game three different times, all with pure fighters. Thanks , but a little too vanila for me.

I, too, recommend fighter/thief/mage. Buy tons of potions. By going solo you should level up fairly quickly but keep in mind you'll be dealing with 3 levels, thus, its still going to take some time. Plus you'll be limited in what you can carry so you'll have to be selective in what you want to sell.

Yeh, fighter/thief/mage was probably going to be my next choice. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 'Health Elixors' provide 10 health points, were as regular 'Healing Potions' only give 8 points? I was also thinking of maybe being a... GNOME. Anybody have any negative experiences with Gnomes? I read in the manual that they incure a penalty for Wisdom, yet gain an addition to thier intelligence and have infravision. Also, instead of being a fighter/mage/thief, I was thinking of maybe just being a thief/cleric. That way I can cast spells (not wizardry), yet eventually I can still wear decent armour (Shadow Armour). Would the thief abilities be hampered if I were to use a 'War Hammer' or 'Mace'?
Anyhue, thanks again everyone.

Actually I love Gnomes. I think they are the most underrated race in the game. When I played Icewind Dale I made a Gnome Cleric/Illusionist as an after thought and was I ever glad I did. He saved my party's butt more times than I care to count. When my brother and I played the old paper and pencil version he had a gnome thief/illusionist and I had a gnome fighter/thief. They were fun characters to play though my gnome was constantly on the run because he ripped off a few temples. But I digress. Shadow armor should be good and using a mace or war hammer will not interfer with your thieving abilities whatsoever. As for the potions that deal with healing I am not sure about the 10 points and 8 points respectively, but I do know that the healing elixer (the purple bottle) will also negate poison such as from spiders.

It will be interesting to hear how you will deal with spiders, sirines, and multi-groups of enemies. Personally, I think BG1 (and many hold to this position)is too fighter friendly. BG2 really took into consideration other clases by way of armor and selection of weapons. Let us know how you fair.

Yes, I agree, it will be a constant struggle. I'm still not quite sure yet what classes I will be. But, I'm leaning towards either a fighter/thief/mage or a thief/cleric. So please people, keep your many suggestions and opinions rolling in!
Thanks.
And I'll definetly keep you guys posted on the progress of whatever multiclass character I solo with.

Actually after carefull consideration I found that it would be great to solo a thief\cleric.
