As I read through these posts I find that people are casting strong spells at really low levels. I am at the fifth level of chapteer two and don't have near the spells I read about. Is there another person to get spells from and how are you building up experience? I have killed everything in sight. I have even gone back and killed things again. And is there a way to get more money?

If by "5th level of chapter 2" you mean Dragon's Eye, then at this point of the game the only vendor of magic is Orrick the Grey in Kuldahar. You'll find some more vendors later, so don't worry.
For money, pick up everything you can carry and sell them all to Orrick or Conlan. You can also sell to the gnome in the airship (yes, I forgot his name ).

Azred,
It's Schmuckatelly Fiddlebender. O.K., so I forgot half his name, too.... mewp, Do you have HoW installed? Lots of new spells in this overlay, and they are available in IWD areas. I am just finishing up the Vale, so am a bit behind you, but know of several means by which folks could have pulled off getting higher level spells. I will list them in roughly descending order of acceptability, and ascending order of ease: 1.) Scrolls that you find can be written into your mage's spell book. (Save game just before trying to write, in case you fail.) I found several spells that were above my multi-classed mage/thief's ability. These scrolls are also very lucrative to take back and sell to Orrick. 2.) (I know this is slightly off-topic, but...) There are items at Orrick's shop that allow you to memorize a higher quantity of the spells that are already in your spell book. 3.) Take your characters solo, or in small groups, through the game. A solo character gains experience 6 times faster than a full party (and gets killed a lot, I'm sure). A 2-character party gets experience 3 times faster than a full party, etc. 4.) With How expansion (or overlay, or whatever you want to call it) installed, play in "Heart of Fury" mode: Monsters get (80 + 3x) hit points, BUT yield (2000 + 4x) experience. So a goblin that normally has (I'm guessing) 15 HP and gives 35 XP, will have 125 HP and yield 2,140 in HoF mode. At that rate, your mage in a full party would be using third level spells before they even got through Kuldahar pass!! 5.) Some people have beat IWD and are replaying the entire expanded game with their advanced cahracters, (HoW/TOTL expansions installed). 6.) Cheat (sort of): Take some some exported characters that have gone all the way through the game, and import then into a beginning party that is at the beginning of the game. 7a.) Cheat (a little): Take advantage of quests and other high experience point events, by running your characters solo through just that part of the game that gives high experience. This involves exporting characters at critical junctures, running each of your party solo through the event, and then reforming your party just after the high experience point event. 7b.) Cheat (decidedly unpaladin-like): A variant of the last cheat, is to save the game just before high xp event and then keep it archived to run other characters, not in the original party, through the high xp event. If the event is pick correctly (i.e., returning a quest item) the same character can be cycled multiple times through the same event. 8.) Cheat (disgustingly bold and blatant): Enable built-in game cheats. You can get all the gold and xp you want. (No, I haven't done it, and therefore can't tell you how, but from what I've read, it's relatively easy). 9.) Cheat (disgustingly bold and blatant): Use a "trainer" program (Again, I have no experience doing this.) It would be easy to cheat enough that the game is no longer fun in the manner in which it was originally intended to be fun (especially by using techniques 7b, 8. and 9.); BUT some people just get a kick out of cheating. To each his own... My guess is that most of the people whom you hear of having uncharacteristically high spell levels are explained by 3. through 7a. Hope this helps explain your original question. |

[B] Ok I admit I have used Cheats through most of the game....But if you use the cheat keys to kill off the monsters, use them wisely. You gain alot of your exsperance through killing them with your players. (in other words dont do it often unless your in deep ummmm well you know.) But I have learned a lot of spells just by buying them and writing them in my spell books ( left click on the spell scroll to see if your player can write them) Sometime your player isnt able to write them down but thats ok there will be more spell scrolls to collect later on (I found a lot of them in The Vale and The Dragons Eye) Ihope my lil throw in helps alil bit....you guys have helped me a lot in this game so far. Happy Gaming.

Look for recent posts by NobleNick regarding difficulties in finding Heart of Winter at this current time; it may not be available to you.
"Soloing" means going through the game with only one character (something I haven't tried to do).
