OK I've started TOTSC and was wondering Which is the best Dualclass option to do before the Durlag's Tower

I have Good ole Imoen...(she's my only thief)....

Edwin -my only Mage.

Viconia- My only Cleric.

Jaheira- Fighter/Druid (can't Dualclass)

Minsc- Ranger (can't Dual)

ME - Fighter (high str & dex)

Should I go for thief/mage for Imoen or Fighter/thief for me?

All opinions will be considered!

This is a problem I was faced with at the beginning of TOTSC. I will tell you now that a Thief is nigh on essential for the successful completion of Durlag's Tower. It was for this reason that I ended up (reluctantly) leaving Imoen as a single class Thief. I just couldn't afford to spend the time waiting for her to regain access to her thief skills.

As for your fighter, duelling to Thief will leave you vulnerable for quite some time, but will make you a more versatile character in the long run. However, you would become less effective as a 'tank' character, particularly if you plan on using this character for play in Baldur's Gate 2.

If you are committed to duel classing then I'd say try it out with Imoen, and go get some EXP in the wilderness first. Oh, and load up on detect trap spells.

As for what I did... I chickened out and just left it. Dual classing can be good fun, but it can also seriously ruin your party's balance.

Only humans can dual class. So Viconia, a drow elf, does not have this option.

Leave Edwin as he is--he is a great mage. When equipped with both Rings of wizardry he will have a whopping 32 (!) level 1 spell memorization slots.

My choice would be to eventually dual Immy to mage. You do need a very capable thief for Durlag's. Ditto what Sharpedge said.
