If you did a full install you only have to have disk 2 in. Otherwise if you did recommended install, get ready to be swapping disk.

WELCOME TO THE IRONWORKS!

Those of us that are into BG2 resent the term disc shuffling, please from now on use the more politically correct term disc juggling
We will let you get away with it this time, but next time we will have to beat you

You could get a no-cd crack if you're tired of juggling cds. I got so tired of putting in my cd that I installed it. Don't use the crack for illegal stuff though.

The disk shuffling is minimal. The game typically asks you to insert CD #3 or #4 *once* per game, the first time you enter it for the particular session. You always start with CD#2 in the drive (it's needed to start up the game).
It works something like this:

- you start with #2 in the drive. If you have no CD or another CD the game will ask you to insert #2.
- if you travel to an area which needs another CD, the game will ask you to insert it. If you travel back to an area you previously visited, there is no need to reinsert the previous CD.
- save games in an area that required you to insert a CD do not need that CD when you load the save.

For example, you start your game with CD #2 in the drive and are exploring the city (Athkatla). When you travel to the Temple District, the game will ask you to insert CD#3. Then you leave the Temple District and go to where you came from (say, the Slums which is on CD#2). You do NOT need to insert CD#2 back in the drive as (I believe) the game stores the relevant information as a temporary cache on your hard disk.

Say you save the game and quit when you are in the Temple District. When you start a new session and load that save, the game will not ask you to insert CD#3 - you can play with CD#2 in the drive.

You do not need CD#1 at all after the game is installed.

I'm not so sure about that. IIRC, you HAVE TO change cd when moving, for example, from Temple District to Slums. That was the main reason why I did full install, 'cause it is really annoying to change cds once in awhile. Example, you do The Unseeing Eye -quest, then you go to Promenade to sell the loot and then go back to do other temple quests.
But I may be wrong, 'cause it's a while since I played the game without full install.

If you don't like juggling disk (like me ) full install is your answer .

What hayashi said holds true normally, but the cache it holds data in has a finite size, so you will sometimes have to swap discs unexpectedly. A full install and you dont have to swap at all. I use a no-cd patch, so I dont need CDs at all. This is recommended, as the BG2 cds are not massively high quality.
