Considering the Staff of the Ram apparently doesn't even have the listed extra piercing damage(?), FoA would come out even further ahead than before...
Staff of the Ram Base damage 1D6 + 12 Style bonus +1 Normal hit average = 3.5 + 12 + 1 = 16.5 Critical hit average = 16.5 * 2 = 33 Over 20 hits... 17 * 16.5 + 2 * 33 = 346.5 Which is 17.325 per hit FoA +5 Base damage 1D6 + 6 Elemental bonus +10 Normal hit average = 3.5 + 6 + 10 = 19.5 Critical hit average = 2*(3.5 + 6) + 10 = 29 Over 20 hits... 17 * 19.5 + 2 * 29 = 389.5 Which is 19.475 per hit Comparing maximum values Staff of the Ram Base damage 1D6 + 12 Style bonus +1 Normal hit maximum = 6 + 12 + 1 = 19 Critical hit maximum = 19 * 2 = 38 Over 20 hits... 17 * 19 + 2 * 38 = 399 Which is 19.95 per hit FoA +5 Base damage 1D6 + 6 Elemental bonus +10 Normal hit maximum = 6 + 6 + 10 = 22 Critical hit maximum = 2*(6 + 6) + 10 = 34 Over 20 hits... 17 * 22 + 2 * 34 = 443 Which is 22.1 per hit As you can see, FoA beats the staff in just about every way imaginable. The only exceptions are when facing enemies highly resistant to elemental damage and when the staff is used by backstabbing thieves. [ 02-16-2003, 02:12 PM: Message edited by: Rataxes ]

Eh? I concede that FoA is more powerful, but it is by far, not the most damaging. Jim's patch does not enhance the SotR, but fixes it to a certain extent. If it could be done, I would rather that the piercing damage act properly with critical hits and backstabs.

Take into the fact that you cannot haste someone with FoA +5 due to its free action ability..... and the fact that a barbarian or kensai with boots of speed+improved haste (Gww helps here too) can hit people as that they are falling away from knockdown.. I would have to give the edge to the staff of the ram... as for the most damaging round of hits *shrug* I really have found that hit per hit FoA +5 has worked a bit better.

Or you can just change between FoA and SotR when it is appropriate
