Here's to you then, Durwyn

*downs his mug of ale in one gulp*

And seeing as I've now gotten myself immersed in this thread anyways, might as well add my two cents: I agree with Tancred's pronunciation. Don't know how Tolkien himself meant it, but at least that's how I've always pronounced it.

After deciphering the apendix (apendix E- what as coincidance!!) I have figured out that Tolkien pronounced it:

LEG-o-las. the 3 vowels are all VERY short (e as in elf, a as in apple, o as in Odin)

As for the stress-
quote:
Originally in appendix E
The position of the 'accent' ot stress is not marked, since in the eldarin languages concerned, its place is determined by the form of the word. In words of two syllables, it falls in almost all cases on the first syllable. In longfer words, it falls on the last syllable but one, where that contains a long vowel, a diphtong, or a vowel followed by two (or more) consonants. Where the last Syllable but one contains (as often) a short vowlel followed by only one (or no) consonant, the stress falls on the sylable before it, the third from the end. Words of the last form are favoured in the Eldarin languages, especually Quenya.

If i have treanslated this correctly, it means that it is pronounced as above, with the stress falling on the first syllable, the third from the end.

In the movie Strider (probably the only non-elf besides frodo that speaks any elven) pronounced it Lay-hoe-las

I've allways pronounced it LEGO-LAS but the real question is how to pronounce "Eomer son of Eomen".

No no no, it's written as 'Legolas', but it's pronounced as 'Arthur Throat-Wobbler Mangrove'.

Eo (as in Eomer, Eomen and Eowyn) is pronounced Ay-o.

Legolas is definitely Lego (like the stuff you played with when you were a kid) Lass.

First post @ Ironworks, btw. Hi all.
