Thanks to all of you for your very helpful hints !

I am glad to hear that it is possible to beat BG without cheating, although I am sceptical as to whether I shall be able to do it (let alone with only one or two characters !).

Looking at what you have suggested so far, I have come to the following conclusions:

- I guess that the first time round I was too impatient, trying to finish the game within a reasonable amount of time (due to work constraints). Playing BG is a bit like opening a box of candy and not being able to stop eating until the box is empty !

- the "tank" strategy seems to work very well (I replayed a few of the early fights with one "tank"). However, I am a bit doubtful about this tactic working in the final level of the game (my "tank" with an AC of -6 got killed every time in the critical fights).

- as some of you have suggested, it is a good idea to keep one's distance and use arrows to attack the enemy (preferably concentrating one's fire on one enemy at a time), thereby avoiding damage in close combat (I used to go into that much too often).

- I'll have to brush up on my spell casting.

- with my luck in combat, I guess next time I'll have to have a priest in my group who can "raise dead" as well as heal wounds !

- and if all else fails, I'll just have to beat a hasty retreat !

I am not sure though just when I'll get around to playing BG through once again, this time hopefully without resorting to cheating (it's that .... work again !).

That may have been your problem right there--most people are able to get their main Tank's AC down to the region of -10 or thereabouts. (The best possible is -12.) I'm not saying you need to have an AC that low, but it would definitely help. Remember: A Tank's job is defense, not offense. Armor Class, hitpoints, and Saving Throws are all-important; things like THAC0 come second.

I tend to use 1 Main Tank and about 2 Backup Tanks (who switch from ranged to melee as needed). All other party members should stay the hell out of melee range, unless you're fighting things like Xvarts. Mages should never even TOUCH any weapon other than a Sling--unless you've got Xan, who actually isn't too shabby with his Moonblade and a good Robe.

Actually, you never CAN cast Raise Dead in BG1: The EXP cap won't allow it. Sucks, I know, but Temples are your only option.

Lots of good advice here, but here's a reminder of another basic rule. If the enemies are causing you a lot of damage, then get someone else to do the front-line fighting for you. As well as summoning helpers, there are lots of charm spells to persuade the bad guys to assist you in your noble quest. Also spells that make them fight amongst themselves, like Rigid Thinking and Confusion.
Don't forget that bullying is not nice, try to out smart your opponents as well as using your tank.

Don't believe the hype. Sarevok is a lot easier than you'd think.

Interesting comment on "the lowest AC is -12" - how do you get to that? My Paladin is only about -6 I think (I'm at work at the mo so I can't check) when wearing Drizzt's armour and defender sword. Any clues?

I haven't calculated the numbers, but the best possible AC (without cheating) must be from:

wearing full plate (AC 1)
DEX 25 (do not remember)
using defender (-2 to AC)
wearing ring of protection +2 or (cloak of protection +2)(-2 to AC)
wearing large shield +2 (-3 to AC)
helm of Balduran (-1 to AC) (not sure if this can be combined with other magic protection gear)

If the character has a DEX of 18 or 19 he has -4 to AC. In this case wearing all of the above mentioned items he will end up at:

AC 1 - 4 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 1 = AC -11 (or AC -10 if you cannot wear the helm together with other magical equipment)

Insane

BTW: If you by cheating disable the rule of not wearing more than 1 magical protection item, you could get higher, but who cares if you do not cheat

Full Plate (AC = 1)
18 DEX (AC = -3)
Helm of Balduran (AC = -4)
Cloak of Balduran (AC = -5)
Ring of Protection+2 (AC = -7)
Claw of Kazgaroth (AC = -8)
Large Shield+2 (AC = -11)
Defender+3 (AC = -13)

The Shield requires ToSC, all other can be found in straight BG. 25 DEX does not apply as the highest legally obtainable DEX is 20, which grants the same AC bonus as 18 DEX.
