At first I'd have suggested the half-elven Ranger/Cleric combination, but since you want a class that is weaker at the start, try the thief/cleric. Alternatively, start out as a human thief or mage and dual class to fighter or cleric later on.

At the very end of a character's progression (without exp cap remvr), which path would be better and why? I mean, if you had a thief/cleric (multi-classed), and a thief/cleric (dual-classed) which would be more powerful at level nine (or whatever)? And with the dual classed character, his classes would be dualed half-way (level five or whatever). Would there even be a difference at all?
Thanks.

A thief\cleric (multi) would continue to grow in both area's he holds. While a thief\cleric (dual) would cease to grow in one area and continue to grow in the next. Best way to do that is to up the thief side first, untill most values are over 100% (lock-pick,f&r trap, and the ever popular hide-in-shadows) then you're cleric side would be able to grow unhindered by the exp. split.

Not exactly. You regain those abilities after you've exceeded the level at which you dual-classed. So in the case of a thief becomming a cleric, as opposed to a cleric/thief, you level up fairly quickly until you decide that your thief knows enough to find most traps, open most locks and maybe hide in the shadows a little. Then you become a cleric, and again you will level up fairly quickly because you'll be a very low level cleric at first.
It does take as much experience to be, say, a level 5 thief and a level 6 cleric dualclassed as it would multiclassed.

The main disadvantage of dualclassing is that you lose your abilities for a while, remaining relatively weak for your experience level.
The main advantage is that you can stop wasting experience points on becomming a better thief if you think the thief's good enough already, so you will have more experience points to spend on being a cleric, allowing you to level up faster in the long run. This way you'll become a more powerful cleric than you could be playing a multiclassed cleric/thief, though a little weaker than a pure cleric, who wouldn't have the thieving skills you do.

And this does seem to fit in with Heinrich's desire to be weak at first but more powerful later on. It will restrict you to playing a human thief at first, and you'll need high dexterity and wisdom scores.

Thanks people, for all of your advice and help. I think I'll try dualing a Gnome from a thief to a cleric, as mentioned earlier. That is, if a Gnome can even be dualed. If he can't, I'll most likely multiclass him. I think I'll name him... "Schlomo Schlavinski the Great". Enough with these blue-eyed, blond-haired, GQ looking fighters I have created in the past.

It is impossible to dual a gnome. Only Humans can be Dualclass.
