There are a lot of easy quests and small battles that you can do to buff up your experience (head to the graveyard for example) - and there's no shame in hit and run tactics when you're very early in the game and too weak to go a full round with a bunch of street muggers.

You can't be afraid of running for the hills when the tide of battle isn't going your way. Save frequently....save often....did I say save alot!!!

Monk is a problem for soloing - they are incredibly powerful at high levels, but very weak to start out. By the end of the game you can walk through most of the toughest battles with no problems, but to start out with you have to be extremely cautious. It was quite some time into the game before I felt confident going about athkatla at night, theres just too much trouble happening to you all at once. Especialy if you're doing the runaround to take down muggers one at a time, and a sodding vampire joins in.

You do have an advantage though - speed. Few things can catch you, so you can normaly run away and come back later. Be careful about getting a horde camped outside the inn while you rest though, they can make it almost impossible to leave.

its worth pointing out that by common consent monk is a hard solo until you get past level 14 at least

soloing weak characters without magic can involve a LOT of resting . . .

Read The Chronicles of Faldorn. It'll explain everything. It's difficult in the beginning... but now it's insane. Suffice to say that much of the early levels were spent as a sword spider, and Iron Skins is the druid's best friend.

WHY CAN I NOT PAY 500 GOLD AND HAVE A CHIME OF OPENING CUSTOM-MADE BY A WIZARD?! They're NOT complicated.
Did you ever get that door open (doesn't say in the Chronicles)?

Soloing is a real pain in the beginning. I'm soloing a sorcerer in BG1 (using BGTutu) and starting out at level one by yourself as a mage was just a bear. I had one wolf that I ran into after I ran out of spells. I insisted on just using a sling to kill this one little measly wolf out in the middle of the woods. I ran, stopped, shot a bullet, repeat. I went around the perimeter of the map THREE TIMES before I killed that damn wolf! The first few levels meant no stoneskin, no mirror image, no summons, no area effect spells (I am following Dundee's list of solo sorcerer spells, and while good for BG2, it is VERY hard the first few levels with those spell picks). However, my guy is now level 11, and nothing can touch him. He regularly just walks into the middle of hordes of enemies and roasts the whole lot of them with a Sunfire. It is always hard in the beginning, but you get all of the xp to yourself, so you level really quick. You absolutely should do all of the quests you can do with little or no combat right away, just to give yourself a little edge. Oh, and if it even begins to look bad, run. No one is there to back you up; you are all by yourself. You just have to be careful.

Nope, never got the door open. I carry the parts with me. I plan on leaving the torso in Watcher's Keep someplace safe and guarding the arms and legs personally.
Unless I were to become so infuriated in trying to bash down the door that I 'lost control' of myself and my abilities.... Hmm... ::starts scribbling on a notepad::
