Legolas would be one good name for the Ranger Archer. He uses mainly a bow(duh), when he doesnt, he uses two short swords(i think). he even uses leather armor!

I like the Tolkien serie 2.. Rad al the books (the hobbit, ring saga, silmarilion..)

great books.. what I thought of was the names like ''Aeglos,Gurthang,Angrist,Grond,Narsil,Ringil''

these are some swords listed in the Silmarilion (if I'm correct), Maybe some one could make them in a real items for Baldurs Gate, I can't reminder the sword gandalfs uses (found it in a troll lair in ''the hobbit'' if memory serves right, also the place were bilbo found ''sting'')

also some nice *creature names* (mostly dragons)

Glaurung (the first dragon of morgoth, father of the dragons)
Ancalagon (the greatest of morgoth dragons)
Uruloki (Quenyaans for ''FireSerpent'' dragon though)
Ungoliant (shelob)
Nazgul (the ring wraiths)

and ofcorse what sever pointed out... Gothmog the High Leadr of the Angband,, those balrogs just look so great (balrog = Demon of Might (sindarians) Valarauko (Quenyaans) served the fires of Morgoth) just so cool

The sword you're thinking about, Gandalf's, is Glamdring, also known as the Orcs Beater. The word Glamdring means 'foe-hammer', IIRC.

Also, if you enjoyed LotR, The Hobbit and the Silmarillion, I urge you to get Unfinished Tales and Lost Tales as well. Both great reads.

It was he who slew and was slain by Gothmog the Balrog, the high-captain of Angband. Denethor's father was undoubtably named after this Ecthelion as was the character in IWD2. It was the cool sound of the name that inspired me to choose it though. Tolkien was quite good at coming up with cool names.
So that was his name, yes now I remember it, the tale of Gondolin was a great one indeed. Tolkien made up lots of good names...personally I like the sound of Mithrandir which is Gandalf's among the elves in middle earth, or Olorin which is his name among the Maiar. Other cool names I like that Tolkien made up is:
Tśrin Turambar, Elendil, Thorin Oakenshield, Beleg Strongbow, Shadowfax, Nazgūl and so many others...

Oh my, I wished somone would make an awesome RPG game based on the Tolkien books someday...and the game would be set after the end of the Lord of the rings trilogy and you would run around in Middle Earth as an adventurer. Maybe hunting for treasuers in the deeps of Khazad Dum and stuff like that...

Now Pippin is just his nickname. His real name is actually Peregrin Took, Merry is also just a nick for Meriadoc Brandybuck...

lol.

I was being sarcastic about Bilbo and Frodo being great names. Maybe you should re-read my post until you comprehend sarcasm

Actually, for a stupid name, nothing beats one of Agatha Christie's mysteries: In "The Secret of Chimneys," she wants to establish an authority figure who can introduce the story, a character whom the reader can accept as a non-suspect and whose word can be trusted.

So she created a fellow from Scotland Yard, and named him Inspector Badgworthy.

Badgworthy, for God's sake!!!

Actually, he was known as Ecthelion of the fountain. He was the leader of the people of the south portion of the city. Ecthelion and the people he lead were arrayed in silver and diamonds and marched into battle to the sound of flutes.

Boromir's granddad was Ecthelion 2nd, and his father, five times removed (300 years or so), was Ecthelion 1st. There is some stuff written about these two men, but, I can't remember any of it off hand right now and will get back to you all as soon as I dig it up.

Tolkien's names rule! I also use names from the Planescape and Michael Moorcock novels as well.
Rog of the Anvil - he also fell at The Fall Of Gondolin. He was the leader of the smiths and single handedly took out MANY balrogs! (I know, I know, it was the much weaker kind of balrog from the Lost Tales, but sounds real cool!)
Alatar the Blue - one of the five wizzards that came from over the sea. He went to the far east of Middle Earth and that's all he wrote.
Turin Turambar - my favorite of the first age stories, a true tragedy. Turin was his real name, but as his life goes on, he would give himself titles. Turambar means Conquerer of Fate.

About names:

When I first played Icewind Dale I, I named one of my characters (dwarf) Hrothgar, since I happened to be reading Beowulf at the time. Imagine my surprise when, near the beginning, Hrothgar met with...

Another Hrothgar.
