I always just assumed he was Sever's creation (and we *all* love hearing his adventures ), but yesterday I bought IWD2, and on page 10 of the manual...
there is a screen shot of Ecthelion battling a 'Malarite High Priest' and some big cats !!!

So who *is* this Ecthelion guy ???
(cause surely it couldn't be a coincidence)

On screenshots of ToB, Ecthelion also appears in the endgame epilogs. I can only assume he was a Bioware playtester's character, or somehting.

Ecthelion's the name of an elven Lord in J.R.R. Tolkien's the Silmarillion... but that's all I know.

Not much help...

Also the name of Denethor's father and Boromir's / Faramir's grandfather. It was in his reign that the White Tower in the Citadel of Minas Tirith was built.

The Ecthelion in my game (and stories) is named after the Elf captain of Gondolin in Tolkien's middle earth. He doesn't play a very prominent part but is greatly distinguished by his deeds at the last stand of the House of Hador and, more notably, the fall of Gondolin. It was he who slew and was slain by Gothmog the Balrog, the high-captain of Angband. Denethor's father was undoubtably named after this Ecthelion as was the character in IWD2. It was the cool sound of the name that inspired me to choose it though. Tolkien was quite good at coming up with cool names.

Yes. Cool sounding names like 'Bilbo Baggins' and 'Tom Bombadil'.

I often think to myself, "wow, that is so cool". lol.

Those two names, really don't sound good to me.. but that is my opinion..
Names like Ecthelion, Aragorn and etc., sound really good.

OK now I feel stupid. I was only raised on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. My mum first read them to me when I was 4, I read them again myself sometime between ages 7-10 (it was a while ago). Never did read his other works though, silmarillion etc, though I always meant to...

ps. My 2 favorite 'fantasy' names for roleplaying have *always* been Boromir (for a dwarf, sounds more dwarfy to me and I usually play dwarves) and Legolas (which will only ever be an elven ranger)
