I watched the directors cut of FOTR this morning. I'm glad I got the extended version - plenty more concerning hobbits, elves going west, the gift giving at Lothloriel (jees they cut a lot of that out in FOTR), gollum history, and the development of Boromir's insanity over the ring. The additional half hour just seemed to complete the experience - what a pity it ended up on the cutting room floor for time constraints.

Still no reforging of Narsil though, which was probably my only real beef with the original. There is a little more storyline though between Arwen, Aragorn and Boromir. Arwen pledging that she will never go to the west, Aragorn turning his back on Narsil and showing reluctance to embrace his heritage because of the failure of Isildur, and Boromir turning around from initial sneering at Strider to eventually encouraging Aragorn (as his dying wish) to embrace his heritage as king and to save Gondor (most of that last bit is in the film, but the whole relationship has more development in the directors cut). Also it has Strider admitting to Galadriel that he desperately wants to save Arwen from the coming holocaust of Mordor, and wants her to go to the west to save herself.

One wonders with people saying that Arwen leaves for the West in the Two Towers, whether she really goes, or whether she heads back to Rivendell, reforges Narsil, and returns to her love at the final battle. Just supposition - time will tell.

Check out these deleted scenes from the movie, that might make it to a exyended version. I got the info from theonering.net.

• Arwen running up to Elrond's veranda in Rivendell in fear, saying 'You have the gift of foresight...'
• Gandalf the White telling Aragorn at night before Helm's Deep that Sauron 'fears what you may become'
• Faramir discovering Boromir's horn cloven in two as it washes ashore
• Arwen walking up towards the shards of Narsil while wearing a cloak similar to the one which she wears while leaving Rivendell
• Further shots of Merry and Pippin being guarded by the Uruk-hai at night
• Further shots of Eowyn standing outside the Golden Hall of Edoras
• Elrond stating the alliance of Elves and Men 'is over'
• Sam making greater use of the Elven rope given to him by Galadriel while travelling to Mordor with Frodo
• Further shots of Arwen and Aragorn together in the past
• The storyline of Arwen taking part in Helm's Deep, including shots of the Rivendell Elves arriving at Lothlorien and Arwen sleeping under falling leaves, was completely scrapped
• Further shots of Eomer's travels in the hunt of orcs or after being banished from Rohan
• Bilbo discussing the departure of Rivendell with Elrond and Arwen
• Saruman claiming he will soon become 'more powerful than the Lord of the Rings himself'
• Several scenes involving the two hobbits and Treebeard, including Merry and Pippin drinking the Ent Draught
• A beautiful soliloquy from Faramir post-battle with the Haradrim, where he asks rethorically 'I wonder what his name was, where his home is, his family. Was he really evil at heart, or did the Dark Lord deceive him, as he has deceived so many others? What lies or threats led him on the long march from his home?'
• More scuffling amongst the Uruk-hai and Orcs whilst in possession of the Hobbits
• Faramir showing Frodo and Sam a way out of Osgiliath through the sewers
• Saruman's speech that begins 'So Gandalf Greyhame thinks...'
• Ents participating in the battle of Helm's Deep
• Flashbacks to Boromir, Faramir and Denethor together
• Further footage of Frodo's scuffle with Sam
• The Uruk-hai invasion of the caves in Helm's Deep
• Eomer pulling Theodred out of some mud post-battle
• Aragorn releasing Theodred's horse Brego, the horse that would save him later, from it's stable
• A flashback to Boromir's death in FotR
• A council of Elves debating whether or not an alliance with Men is feasible
• Legolas scolding the stupidity of the Elves not to assist the race of Men with their fight against Sauron
• Eowyn about to slay an Orc in the caves - may appear in RotK
• Gimli smoking a pipe while resting on a dead orc - may appear in RotK
• Further shots of Gollum travelling to Mordor with the hobbits, including him ordering not to stop on a certain road and extensions to the cooked rabbit scene
• Flashback to Smeagol killing Deagol over the One Ring while fishing on the River Anduin - will appear in RotK
• Merry and Pippin discussing what will happen to them when the Uruk-hai find out they don't bear the One Ring
• Sam discussing the changes occuring to Frodo with Gollum while the Ringbearer is asleep
• Gimli exploring the beautiful caves under Helm's Deep with Legolas
• The Orcs of Mordor joining the band of Uruk-hai
• Aragorn conversing with someone at night while lying down in a Rohan camp

That first one about gift of foresight is on the TV trailer promoting the film - I have seen it so often lately that I couldn't say for sure if it was cut from the film or not. I saw the film today, and I can't believe that duty to the father will win out over love - so I am betting that Arwen stoms back into Rivendell, Narsil gets reforged (yeah, I an wanting that to happen at last), then she delivers it to him when she rejoins him on the battlefield at Gondor. At least that is what I want to see . I am hoping that the extra scenes back at Rivindell (regarding that whole going west bit)are just the medium for maintaining a stronger love interest theme in the middle movie.

I enjoyed the film - Golllum is the show stealer. They have done a wonderful job with the internal battles between Gollum and Smeagol. And Gollum's song with the finishing credits - very haunting music. Man, I can't wait for the directors cut DVD.

The other biggie for me was the charge of the Rohirrm down the mountain to fall on the army of Saruman. The whole battle for Helm's Deep was extremely well handled. The battle of Orthanc was probably the only thing that jarred for me - it looked a bit overly "scale modelled" despite the fantastic efforts to portray the ents. Gandalf breaking Sauruman's hold over Theoden was an excellent interpretation of events

I saw the film on the 20th while I was in Miami and loved it. I think these scenes would be really good to add in on a DVD, but I understand why they were cut for timing. It seemed to me, perhaps because some of these scenes were cut, that the TT movie actually did not cover all of the TT book, leaving out some notable events, including the whole ascent of Cirith Ungal.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the trilogy itself (book) is actually broken down into four "Books" - right? I was thinking that perhaps they stopped short of the end of the TT book (a cliffhanger with Sam and Frodo, IIRC) and instead ended with Helms Deep and Orthanc.

As for the fleeing army being trapped in the rear by the Ents, I certainly noted that was missing, but I thought maybe it would be in the 3rd Trilogy along with Cirith Ungol.

Anywho, this was one of the best movies I've seen. And, yeah, mayhap some footage of the Ents ransacking Orthanc/Isengard (anyone care to tell me the difference?) was a slight bit noticeably computerized, but come on - has there ever been anything in film like the battle for Helm's Deep? Truly truly amazing, and done so very well. Plus, let's not forget all that AWESOME up-close footage of Ents - which must have been a CGI nightmare.

I'd like to also mention, you'll have a good laugh by some of the stuff Gimli does/says. I'd say the second was far better than the first, but the first was just getting you in the mood. You'll be on the edge of your seat probably 95% of the time, the other 5% being the Frodo and Samwise convos..

Wow, we saw it three days after it was out and they had it in 3 places in that theater. We had some empty seats at the first show of the day, too! See, Hugh, you need to move to upstate!
