Yes, Mina was very detatched, shallow .... but as for her being that way because she was a religeous fanatic ... I don't know. Crysania was a fanatic, but she had substance, even if she did get annoying at times. Also Raistlin was sooo far beyond any mortal, more so than Mina, but you had a real feel for what motivated him - for good or evil.
As for the orig chars being more naive, I would say more Tolkienesque. Even their late chars like Kang and Slith. You could get a strong picture of the charactor. For that manor even minor chars like Bertrem. Mina just didn't have that kind of substance. I really did like the book. But after 16 yrs of following these chars .... the send off was very Seinfeld.

there is a slight miscommunication, fault is on my part. you are right that Raistlin and Crysannia have substance. they do, because the ways that relate them are solid and grounded. they still soar above mortals, yet their spirit had found a soul.
the misunderstanding is, the description of Mina itself, is shallow. the description has a spirit that wants to be the masterpiece (the authur spent a lot effort on her), yet it fails to graspe something essential about this character. it lacks great reflections on Mina, as it appears she was too out of place. another thing, Crysannia maybe a fanatic, but her source of faith contains an uncertainty, thats what seperate she and Mina. I agree there. Mina is just lacking .... something. Mostly because there is ALOT of epic scale events going on and the plot is kindda whirlwind, not much time developing each plot thread. Two chars I though were really well developed were Gilthas and the Lioness. Lord Menthor (sp?) was well described too. Gilthas developed significantly since his intro.
