Anyone read Dragons of a Fallen Moon? I have been a big fan of Margret Weiss and Tracey Hickman since 87(?) or so, and have read their other works outside the DL series. The charactors that they started with though they nurtured and were all deep and memorable. I think the core DL books are right up there in quality with Tolkein (not = but on the same stage) and definatly helped shape DnD and fantasy liturature (along with Bob Salvator and of course Ed Greenwood). Who doesn't LTAO when remembering Fizban/Tasslehoff/Flint getting in trouble or imagine Raistlin as mage incarnate or stifle a tear (ADMIT IT!) at Sturm's last stand? Actually all of their charactors, big and small have depth and being.
That said, back to my point. I liked the book, but it REALLY had that "Last Episode" over tone. Yes MW and TH have stated that they will never publish another DL book. Not only did it have the last episode feel, it didn't really have the magic that their previous works did. I actually thought it felt like the last Seinfeld episode. Lots of cameos, saying goodbye to fav charactors, more of a fizzle than a bang. This is not a spoiler thread. I was just wondering what anyone else thought - about this book and the series in general.

SMALL SPOIL:
you mean the book with Mina in it? a few chapters are quite good (ones with tass in it), I enjoyed it. I dont like the ending with Dalamar, he was a prick at the end, stupid moron. and how could he fell for that after the action he took previously? |

I actually like Dalamar. All he did was very in charactor. The book was also very good at tying up loose ends of the Fifth Age. Of course I loved Tas, too brief though. Quote:

I Havn't read Fallen Moon but I've read the first two, I thought they were pretty good actually, even though it's sad too see so many of those excellent characters perish and die over the years...Is it true that MW and TH are not writing any more DL books? Shame...I've always found DL has overall been a much better Story than Forgotten Realms...I've never felt the same way about Drizzt or any other FR char. as Raistlin or Tas or Tanis. DL characters were so much more real in a sense...oh well.

Still waiting for Dragons of a Fallen Moon to be released as a pocket... I have the other two in pocket format as well, and even though the hardcover version is available already, I prefer to have all three parts in the same format.

oh yeah! it is DEFINATELY a good book (but not as good as Autum or Fall of these DL series, the ones where Flint, Caramon, Raistlin, Sturm, Tanis and Tas! are in it!)
you are right, Dalamar was in character. well, there is one thing that bugged me so much was Mina ... she is a religious fanatic idealist. the thing with her is, her character is extremely hard to portrait, and extremely hard to bring it just to the level that ppl don't give you the raised eyebrow while not overdone it. in my opinion, Mina's character is very shallow, and her religious enthusiasm empty and lack of reflection. you know, a very simple rule is, after reading dragon lance (the older series) I LOVE the characters no matter how evil they were. Raistlin, Dalamar (the old one) and even the self-righteous elven king in Qualinast, were my all time favors... but Mina, it was really hard for me to love this character. it seemed so very unreal, and incorpereal. of course, such Mina-like characters are above the standards of realism, they soar high above the mortals, nothing can ground them or set a limit to them. however, I'd rather see a real description of this incorperealness rather than an incorpereal one. I hope I explained it. |

I really like your explanation 250 It really says it really well, like you I really couldn't connect to Mina like I did with the evil characters of older books, which made reading the War of Souls (only the first two at the moment) a little strange and detached...
