I am not surprised. I have been paddled for worse than that! This is nothing! Hit three times...shit...that is for wimps!

I was paddled 19 times for continuing to incorrectly spell the word b-e-c-a-u-s-e. And that was in first grade!

In first grade, the kids started with one paddle, then worked up, adding one each additional offense. I ended my first grade year with 32 paddles! I had the top score...and my butt was sore!

I was spanked with the principle's paddle (alot harder than a normal one) 10 times for calling a kid a fag.

This kid got off easy.

The raised fist is an ultimate passive expression of refusal to bow to an external oppressive. I recall two American olympians were stripped of thier medals for executing the same jesture during the national anthem part of the awards ceremony during the 1968 games I think.

It was made popular by the Black Panthers and other freedom fighters. Recently groups like Public Enemy and Rage against the machine have made this jesture of questioning goverment's authority and justfulness "popular" again, if that word "popular" can apply to nonconforming antidisestablishmentarianism and the questioning of authority in order to make an independant decision instead of following blindly.

I wonder how this simple act of silently saying "No, you will not subject YOUR religious beliefs about MY nation upon me by ritualizing them as a group activity in my PUBLIC school" became so disruptive when it involves standing silent, head bowwed and one fist raise high in the air.

*assumtion*
I bet the teacher confronted the student, demanding he leave the class room or something like that. He refused so the teacher escalted the conflict, getting a rise out of an angry teenager is so easy. Any hoo, I bet the teacher has little respect for this type of free-thinking student in the first place and probably would have never cared to find out where he was coming from.

*end assumtion*

When I moved to Alabama during the tender years of seventh grade, I got paddled for saying "what" to my science teacher instead of "Maam"
I got paddled again the next day for answering one of her questions " yes" instead of "yes Maam" The catch is I had just moved and started school in this new place a week before and nobody told me to say yes Maam or no Maam. Although I now live in Yankeeville (actually redsoxville)I still reply to women of all ages as Maam when appropriate. My wife has burned the habit out of me when refering to her though. 1st they shouldn't force anyone to say the pledge. A forced pledge is not a pledge, it must be voluntary. Anyone saying or not saying the pledge must do so of their own choice or it's just BS & Poetry.
2nd we paddle'em here in the Heart of Dixie, it's what the elected reps of the people have decided. If the people of Walker county don't want paddling they'll elect new reps to change the school policy.

And for entertainment we didnt have tv. We had to lie on the ground and wait for a cloud to form the shape of a tit! Geez the youth of today is spoiled.

In my school, we had this system; if you got caught not saying the pledge, you got your ass chewed out by the teacher. I know this for a fact, since I got caught doing it. Or not doing it. Regardless, she said that the only reason you shouldn't do it is because of religion, blah blah blah, some crap that I didn't care about because it was jingoist propoganda. I would've argued, but I was too damn tired. Yes, I would have argued with a teacher. Encroaching on my rights of freedom of politics makes it fair game to me.

You TOO! I got it in Florida. MY Dad was in the Military so we move alot. 4 years earlier when we moved to Washington State BOTH of my older brothers got in trouble for saying "Yes Ma'am" the teachers thought they were sassing them, and being smart asses. So we quit saying Yes Ma'am to the teachers. Then we moved back down to Florida and I got in trouble for not saying Yes Ma'am

I'm going to disagree with you on the passive part, The Black Panthers were anything but passive, having comitted shootings, bombing, and other acts of violence.

Just because those who used to use it were not in general passive it doesn't mean that they cannot have had it as a passive gesture. Or that others cannot use it as such.

It goes to show the disrespect, because of the history of the raised fist in the USA. If you were meaning it as a passive gesture, then would using the Nazi salute be just fine?
