I would like to have a Ranger/Cleric in my party. I would like Valygar to be it. He is a Ranger and human, it is reasonable to dual class him to a cleric. However, that doesn't seem to be possible with NPCs.
Is there any workaround? Is there anything I can do with Shadowkeeper? |

A Ranger needs 15 STR and 17 WIS to dual to a Cleric.

The thing that discouraged me was that the button to Dual Class him is disabled on the NPCs in general (as far as I have seen). It didn't seem to me as if the game engine was checking at this point his stats
You mean, that if I get Valygar into my party, save the game and then edit his stats in Shadowkeeper, it should be possible? |

1) You have to be human 2) You can only dual class to valid multiclass combinations OK, I have to check this point, but my 2nd Ed. Rulebook is out of reach at the moment. 3) your prime stats in your old class have to be at least 15, in your new class at least 17. (The prime stats in PnP and Computer AD&D maybe a little bit different...) Chris |

Hi Thuram!
Yes, if you use Shadowkeeper to edit his stats you should be able to dual class him to cleric. If you are worried about "cheating", you could always reedit his stats back to their original values afterwords. (Some people, of course, will consider this to be cheating anyway, but as long as you are doing it for your own enjoyment there's nothing wrong with it. Besides, Anomen and Minsc really don't have the stats to be what they are, either.) You should probably also consider editing his existing weapon proficiencies; as they are not compatible with his new role as cleric they will be useless. Don't forget that you would then only be able to backstab with the club and quarterstaff.

Pity that Yoshimo's the only NPC you can dual class. A real pity.
In BG1, if memory serves, you could DC Imoen to mage and Shar-Teel to thief. Still, amazingly straightforward paths for NPC development I don't know how moral it would be Thuram, but if you edited Valygar's stats to the point where he could DC to cleric, but kept the same total stats count (85) and didn't drop below the ranger's required stats, it would be close enough to creating your own character that it wouldn't be too bad.

Valygar hates magic. I guess this goes for priest spells too

Thanks for the answers.
This would be my 4th time through the game, so I really don't mind doing some minor cheats. I could start my own party in multiplayer mode and create all the party members, but for the fun of the game I prefer that my companions talk from time to time. So I guess I will see how I can reduce the cheating to a minimum. I can even consider to make him do a "sacrifice" in order to become a cleric; there are enough items and potions in the game to compensate. When I played BG1 I used a walkthrough. I learned that lesson in BG2, spoilering and powerplaying usually reduces the fun a lot and makes the game boring. So I will see which story I can imagine to reasonable explain Valygar's conversion to a cleric. Maybe after solving the planar sphere and learning that in the end Lavok was not such a bad guy he loses some resentment to his family's playing with magic. |
