I will say Minsc. He has no useful abilities besides being a pretty good sword-swinger and he levels so slow!

As I say to everybody else. Take Yoshi with you as you set out to rescue Imoen. That will relieve you for making a rather nasty choice. It will also make the plot mesh more properly.

Er, Minsc and Valygar level at the same speed. They're both rangers.

I would get rid of Yoshimo and get Keldorn, and get rid of nalia and get Jan. Keldorn so that he can use the special paladin weapons and Jan because he is a Multi-classed Mage-thief so he can get better thieving skills.

Dump Minsc and do it now. While I always feel just a little guilty about giving Minsc the boot I never let it stop me. Valygar is a much better Ranger, better weapon distribution than Minsc. (Why would anyone duel weild maces?). Give Valygar Celestial fury and let him dual wield that with his family blade and he can hack and slash his way through most anything. I have never regretted having Valygar in my party, I wish I could say the same for some other characters. There is one small additional benefit in replacing Minsc with Valygar, you get use of the quick slot taken up by Boo. I have never figured out just how to activate Boo though I assume he has some remarkable abilities.

I don't know... I think that if you really want Valygar you should get rid of Minsc, as two rangers in a party is one too many. Although are you sure you prefer Valygar? Minsc's stats are such that he is pure tank, combat stats at the expense of "cushy" stats. Valygar isn't as strong as Minsc. And personally, I find Valygar irritating. And Minsc has far better battlecries!
When Valygar asked me about magic I almost put my moonblade through the monitor. Does the guy ever think about anything else than how bad magic is? Yeah, he does, actually. When he's almost dead, he asks for someone to use MAGIC to heal him. True, he doesn't ask for magic, but in BG2 there's no other way to heal someone (besides resting.) Minsc blithers about goodness, but his INT is 8, so you can't really blame the guy.
BUT everyone has their preferences. So in my mind the question isn't who should you drop, but who do you take: Minsc or Valygar? It all comes down to personal preference.

I only had Valygar once in my party, and he lost the ability to backstab after he died once, (This is a bug corrected by the Baldurdash fixpack) so I found him pretty useless. I'd take Minsc over him. His starting proficiencies in BG1 were Large Swords and Spiked weapons (Flail's/Morningstars) so it puzzles me why he has them in mace at the beginning of BG2??!?! I usually hacked them to Flail instead of mace at the beginning of BG2.

PS. He's pretty good with 2 handed swords as well.
