I really don't know why everone needs enforcements (like Ironman setting) to play a game without dozends of reloadings. I always play so,it's much more fun to me. And my "own will" prevents me from hacking my computer to pieces after a crash.

But I know, that I repeat myself .

You can get around Ironman if you want just copy the save file and save it someplace else. I wouldn't play ironman my system crashes to many times.

If you enable autosave, the game saves at the start and end of each fight (at least in ironman mode). So if the game crashes, you can continue to play from that point. When i'm exploring big areas without monsters (Mt. Gigas caves, for example), i enter combat mode sometimes without opponents, to avoid problems with crashes.

AUTOSAVE WARNING: there are some cases in which the autosave kicks in too soon after combat and you miss the drops. This can kill your game.
