I have met the DS in two places in the swamp. 1) When entering from Trynton, go east following the path, pass thru the hollowed out tree you can walk under with three exits (not a log), then turn left (north) before the little hill. 2) Going south from Crock towards Marten's Bluff he is south and west of the Steelhide croc log in an open area. I'm not sure you have to talk to the Don first but it would make sense, plot-wise.

You need to find the DS so you pay the outrageous fee for the astral dominae.

He's always shown up around that ominus tree in the swamp, in the very beginning along the path. But thanx for all the help, hopefully he'll show up

Oh, and you have to talk to the Don before the DS will show up in the swamp with the fake.
Much as it pains me to correct our lovely Canadian kitty, this is not correct; I recently took my Rangerettes party through the Swamp from "the other side", i.e. Arnika, Northern Wilderness, Mountain Wilderness, SE Wilderness. We met Darkie (and received the fake) near the dark spot north of Crock's house, and had never even been into the Trynton map.

Thank you for the correction, Chaos, . I should have added "in my experience, and from other people I've talked with"
I've never had the DS appear to me before I've talked with the Don, and I'd spent alot of time in the swamp wandering before chatting with the Maffi-ratso.
Plot-wise though, I don't know how the DS would drop the fake if we hadn't commissioned the Rats to swipe the real thing, in the first place. To me that just does not make sense, continuity wise, right? I mean, the DS has the real AD-and it isn't until we get the Don to swipe it and replace it with the fake, that the DS should have the fake?...or does the stealing happen regardless of whether we talk with the Don? (Light goes on) hey.....I might be slow but at least I catch on! LOL

The Don had already stolen the AD by the time you met him. Even if you never even talked to the Don and kill him when you first see him, he will still drop the AD. I believe that this is mainly in place so that you can finish the game regardless of the order in which you try to do things.

The whole story line with the Don and the AD just provides a way for you to acquire the AD without killing the Don. Something that I do not know is whether the AD will be for sale even if you have not talked to the Dark Savant in the swamp. I'll have to try that next time.

It's been a while since I didnt just kill the Don the first time I saw him, but I seem to recall that the AD is up for sale whether or not you've seen the DS in the swamp.

I just remember that feeling the first time he said "100,000 gold" before I learned the value of money in wiz 8! (ie - oh my god, where am i gonna come up with that???)

Of course, my alchemist and I know better now.

The AD is only for sale if you met DS.

But if you don't get the AD, you can't reach the end. Thus Don has to drop it when you kill him before you bought it, even if he shouldn't have it yet according to the plot.

Nope; no matter how many times you go back to see the Don, if you haven't met Darkie in the swamp yet the Don will just say "We ain't got it yet". Of course, if you kill him, you find out differently.

In other words, your party would say 50000 gold for the AD, we need it, how about 100000 gold, look we'll even give you 150000 and throw in a robes of rejuvenation. Just get it! Thats why he held on to it...
