Swap file question

I recently installed Wizardry 8 on a very full hard drive. Now, not only is all of my free time spent on this completely addicting game, but a great deal of my hard drive space as well. I recently noticed that the game is eating up my remaining space as I play. Though I could not find it in the Wizardry 8 directory, I assume this extra HD space is actually the swap file or some other cache on my hard disk. My question then is two parts:

1) Where is the swap file stored? and 2) Is there an option in the game to set the size of that file.

I read in these forums that the recommended swap file size is about 600MB. Would that I could spare so much space!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Your swap file is part of your OS (Operating System), it is not part of the game.

Depending on your OS, there is different ways to change its. Post the OS that you have and I can shed some light on the subject. Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, or XP.

rightclick with your mouse on MY COMPUTER icon in the desktop, click properties, then PERFORMANCE, and then VIRTUAL MEMORY; there you'll be able to setup the size of your swap file; recommended is 3x your RAM ammount;
swap file is either in the C: root directory or in the directory c:\windows

ryu is correct if you are running something short of Windows XP and NT as well I think. But give it a try, if you are running XP, just post a note here and I will give some directions for it.

Thanks for the speedy replies! On the OS, I am running Win98. More system specs:

366mHz Celeron Processor
160 MB of Ram
32MB Nvidia Graphics Card

While the processor is low spec, it still runs pretty smooth until the swap file maxes out the HD space.

For your amount of RAM, about 400 MB for a fixed size swapfile should be fine. One thing that helps with performance is to defrag with something that can move your swapfile (e.g., Norton Utilities defragger, NOT the default windows defragger). It should put your swap into one continguous block for better performance.

Are you sure that it is a swap file that is eating your hard drive space?

My first thought is that it could be your save files. The save files are not a static size, they increase in size as you get further in the game. My last save, just before entering the final temple and completing the game, was about 2.5 mg in size while one of the first saves is only 280k. Even if you only use a couple of file names and save over the old file, you will still use up more and more of your hard disk space as you get further in the game.

Wow - The rate, speed, and frequency of replies here far exceeds that of the Sir Tech Forums! Thanks again for all the info. I'm making some tweaks tonight.

Also, Knarfling, I think you may also be right, as i noticed a much larger hit as I repeatedly used quick saves. I will see if I can keep the number of saves down and also adjust the swap file size. I'll also lay my hands on copy of norton utilities at my next convenience. Thanks again!
