Is this possible in a BG1/TotSC game?
Start as a Human Fighter, with **** in Large Sword (or whatever) and dual class to Thief after level 6. You should have enough XP to reach Thief level 8 then, and that's when Thieves can add a proficiency point. Is ***** possible?

Well, my unscientific experiment (fighter with 18 STR and DEX CLUAed to 32k XP, then dualled and levelled to cap) led to some...unexpected results. First off, for some reason, you can only start proficient in weapons, not use your entire 4 stars in one single weapon. Still not a big deal. However, when I dualled (which was with 4 * first in axe, then on experiment #2 in longsword,) I could not reach grandmastery. Even with the second star (the one after fighter class was reactivated.) I tried this two different ways of XP, one with each level individually and one where I did the levels in chunks - same results. Clearly, this is different than dual-classing in BG2 Unless there's something there I'm not seeing, the surprising answer is - no!

Awww, crapola. I thought I had figured out the way to the most powerful BG1-only character.

The other strange thing is that, even though a Fighter/Thief can go to 2 * in a weapon proficiency, a dualled Fighter=>Thief cannot unless it's done while as a pure class fighter.

I don't understand why this is a mystery. If I'm not mistaken 2e rules are that a second class cannot add proficiencies unless allowed by the single class character - so a thief (while a thief) can never add prof points beyond the first one. This isn't how it works in BGII, but it is how it's supposed to work.
Although the dual classed theif->fighter should be able to add proficiency points to those accumulated as a fighter. So for instance if you dual a thief who has no prof points in large sword and one in small sword he should be able to add proficiency points in large sword to his hearts desire, but should NOT be able to add to his small sword proficiency. I have a feeling the game lets the fighter add to his thief prof points illegally. Well sort of illegally.

The only reason it's a mystery is because it's handled completely differently in BG2. A fighter, dualled at level 2 to mage (theoretically of course) could still grandmaster in a weapon.
I have no idea how 2e rules work - none of us, while I was DMing at least, ever dual-classed. Thank god.
