"Thieves' World" was a shared world anthology (perhaps the first) which took place in the city of Sanctuary. First published in the late 70s or early 80s, it eventually comprised 12 anthologies, a couple of novels, games, you name it. Unfortunately, we have had no accounts of events in Sanctuary since the late 80s. This is about to change.
I am holding in my hot little hands an advance publisher's proof of "Thieves' World: Turning Points", which has a publication date of November, 2002. Edited by Lynn Abbey, it contains stories by her, Andrew Offutt, Mickey Zucker Reichert, Diana Paxson, Selina Rosen, Dennis McKiernan, Robin Wayne Bailey, Jody Lynn Nye, Jeff Grubb, and Raymond Feist. While I haven't read it yet, I know what I'm going to be doing with my spare time over the next couple of days. WOOHOO!!!

This is music to my eyes
![]() I had a geeky friend in H.S. who tried to get me to read them but I laughed him and the books off. Fifteen years later, I couldn't keep my hands off of them LOL. Could you provide a title for the June release so I know what to look for? What a shame they have to go to the bottom of my "to read" list lol...ah well, its been nearly 10 years since I've read any of them, I guess a few more months won't hurt anything. Hey, would you care to make a list of the titles in the Sanctuary stories for those who may be unfamiliar with them or for those of us who may have missed a choice read along the way? Thanks for listing the authors btw! |

The title that was released last June was "Sanctuary" by Lynn Abbey. She refers to it as a novel that recaps all previously published anthologies "while leveling the playing field for ... new stories". Essentially, from what I have been able to gather, the timeline has been advanced by ten years or so.
I wish that I could list everything for you, but the info I gave before actually came from the author's afterword. I'd read the first 5 or 6 of them and then went through a very difficult time in my life where I didn't have much time to spend on reading. I reread what I had a few years ago and realized that I had forgotten just how good they were. Right now what I have is either stored in boxes at my mom's house, or buried somewhere in the "Library of Doom" here Anyway, if I get the time I'll do a little research and see if I can post the titles, unless some kind soul beats me to it. ![]()

Thank you for the title of the June release!
I'll definitely look for it (although I was a little disapointed in the turns some of the characters took as the stories progressed by the time I finished the last one.) I used to have all the books but my ex took my library with him when he moved out. (jerk lol) Those books did list the titles of other books written on Sanctuary and its characters so when I make my next trip to the used bookstores, I'll see what I can find and post the titles here for others...if you or some other kind soul doesn't beat me to it ![]() Thanks again! Thieve's World
Here is a site I just found that takes you through the first twelve books. Looks like I missed one myself. ![]() EDIT: THE UP BUTTON takes you to a listing of titles by Robert Asprin, including all those in the Myth series, one of my all time favorites. *Posting mysteriously from the post above LOL* (I Had to fix my big mistake in the directions in the last edit.) Thoran, LOL Great name for a cat! [ 09-09-2002, 10:30 PM: Message edited by: Moni ] |

Yes, I remember "Thieve's World" well. It started out great, but by the time the 6th or 7th book rolled around the writing became boring (and, yes, I stuck it out all the way through the 12th book) and it became predictable. It reminded me of a soap opera with uber characters. Plus, the ending was mightily disappointing because it just fizzled.

Yes - the series fizzled a bit near the ending - especially where the had to bring in new authors to fill out the books, as the regular writers dropped out.
