During the first 3 chapters you will encounter difficult enemies who try to attack with swords or NPCs that need to speak to you before attacking you. In these cases take a party member to walk near it, draw its attention, and run away from it. Stay close enough so you keep its attention but far enough away so it can't talk to you. Let your archers do the rest. I first tried this against Borda (1 west of Naskel). He needs to talk before fighting (or using magic) so he chased me around while my archers pecked away until EUREKA!

The only problem being that you end up killing them before they go hostile and turn red, and I believe this means you only get 10% of the XP for killing them.
It's been a while since I ToTSC'd, though, so I *may* be wrong.

Congratulations with your 1st post 'Squire The Hard'
The mage at the stairs at FAI is easy if you manage to interrupt his mirror image spell. Otherwise - yes it is a hard battle. Insane

I can confirm that killing enemies when they are not Hostile to you earns only 10% or their normal EXP. A good rule, actually, I'm surprised they seem to have turned it off in BG2.
As for Tranzig, I *HATE* him. Not because he's difficult, but because he cheats. He casts 1 Level 1 spell (Magic Missile) and 2 Level 2 spells (Mirror Image and Horror). He also has about 12 hitpoints. These would seem to indicate a very low-level Mage....so why the hell does he cast Magic Missile at Level 9??? Think about it--a Level 9 Mage practically OWNS the Sword Coast--Thalantr himself looks to be about Level 7. Tranzig should have better things to do than hang out by a staircase all day, waiting to collect a whopping 120 gold pieces for your head. Why BioWare made his Magic Missile so powerful is beyond me--I would MUCH rather have him cast like a Level 4 Mage (2 MMs per casting) and have 3 Level 1 slots open, instead of this "I-get-my-spell-off-and-you-instantly-lose-a-party-member" BS.

And on top of that, nobody in your party has better than a 25-50% chance of hiting even a SQUIREL! But, after you have beaten him once or twice, he's obviously not all that difficult to figure out. However, when you are confronted by him for the FIRST time ever, yep, he's one tough cookie.

Tranzig is doable IMHO.. if you play it smart, then you can have the advantage of some guards hitting along with you. There are three guards at the Friendly Arm Inn that can help you out. Just make sure you deliver the last blow, and you'll get the XP!
And as was said: the Mirror Image is the little bugger that makes sure that you die (takes too long to hack it away).

Tranzig is the bandit informant in Beregost. I am sure that that was lapsus digiti (I've mostly forgotten latin), Six, but I am surprised that it doesn't sound wrong to other people.
The mage you kill (I hope ![]() Why he does cast spell with five bolts, I can not fathom. It is not the scroll he cast it from, is it?

I did, however, know that his name started with the letter "T", such as: Tranzig, Tazok, or the other (which I could not recall) Tarnesh. Anyways, thanks for setting us all straight Vedran! ![]()
