What level can you successfully dual class Imoen to a mage to get the most out of both classes. Also is there anyone else in the game you can dual class.

Well, the experience cap in BG1 is only 89000 unless you have ToTSC. That would imply a L6 thief/L7 mage dual.

With ToTSC, the experience cap increases to 161000 (-ish ). This takes us up to L7 thief/L8 mage dual.

However, there isn't too much point in dualling Imoen to a mage in BG1 because...

(here follows a SPOILER about IMOEN in BG2)

In BG2 she will have been made into a thief/mage dual class anyway. Any changes you have made are ignored, you must use the new 'template' Imoen.

Are there any mage-clerics, or other dual-classable characters in the game.

my take on this is that if you're going to dual class Imoen at a sensible level (5ish) you need to pick the two skills you are going to get respectable and concentrate on them - i spread stuff out too much and only use a dualled Imoen's thief bit for finding trips and archery (with another thief doing locks and stealth)

Yes, there are a few dual classed (or multi ?) NPCs in the game.

I can't name them all, but I'm exactly 96.45872% sure that there are atleast three.

Oh and yes, there is a "mage/cleric" by the name of Quayle, he's actually an Illusionist/Cleric and is neutral (IIRC).

I will even venture to say that, most gamers would place him (Quayle) in their top six most favorite/useful NPCs in the game.

His stats are not spectacular and since he is dual-classed, he tends to level up a little slower than the rest of your party.

But, given that he is a cleric, he can wear pretty much any type of armor and still cast priest spells and if you give him a good warhammer say... the warhammer +2, he can go in and be a back-up tank.

But if you do give him plate mail, he will obviously not be able to cast any mage spells, so that's why I save up all my coin and go buy the 'Robe of Neutral Archmagi".

This robe will bring his AC down to about zero, versus -4 with full plate mail.

Quayle's usefulness in my opinion, is in that he can memorize a WHOLE CRAP LOAD of spells, the combonation of priest and mage spells that is.

The biggest problem with him is the fact that you cannot get him until about chapter 4, but if you are almost to that point, then it may not be a bad idea to go and pick him up. Hope I helped.

Dual-classed: There are 2 NPCs whose stats will allow them to Dual. None of the NPCs you meet will already have Dualed.

Multiclassed: There are 6 NPCs who are Multiclassed.

To nitpick Sir Heinrich's post, Quayle is Multi, not Dual, and cannot be accessed until Chapter 5.

That's a good point thar Armen makes - figure out what skills you will use later in the game so that the ability points are where you need them. Much of the sucess of dual-classing is down to planning ahead.

Apart from the two who have the correct stats, has anyone ever managed to dual-class any of the NPC's by giving them Tomes? It probably isn't worth the effort but I wondered if it was possible.

Theoretically....
Xzar could become a Thief or a Cleric
Safana could become a Mage
Branwen could become a Thief
Dynaheir could become a Cleric
Weird!

So what do you think, Six. Are any of these combinations worthwhile from a tactical or roleplaying point of view. I could possibly imagine Xzar as a mad Cleric with Turn Undead ability, or maybe Branwen as a specialist trap finding Thief. Oh and don't forget a couple of the Illusionary NPC's could join the gang as well. If only the Tomes came a bit earlier in the game it might put a new spin on some familiar characters.

Hmmm.....as far as I can tell the only NPC Duals that would seem to make sense are:
Imoen->Mage (which is possible without Tomes),
Shar-Teel->Thief (ditto),
Safana->Enchantress (requires Tomes), and
Branwen->Fighter (which not even the Tomes would allow.)

Dynaheir and Xzar already seem to be perfect where they are--especially Xzar. He can barely stay in one personality long enough to complete a sentence, how's he going to curry the good graces of a god? There's no god of insanity, as far as I know, although Cyric does come pretty close.

[EDIT:] Spelling. "Gurry" the good graces of a god? That's an abundance of absurd alliteration from an advocate of an asinine, alcoholic adolescence. [/EDIT]
