How does the game figure out hitpoints/level for multi-class characters?
I have a Figher/Magic-User/Cleric. According to my math 10+4+6 = 20, 20/3 = 6.6666 Add constution bonus (18 con = +2hp/level) Im only getting 4 or 5 hp/level with the max hitpoints/level option on. Is the game screwing me, or am I just doing something wrong with the math. |

Multiclass characters get the normal hit points per level, divided by the number of classes you have. So just calculate your normal HP's, including Constitution bonuses (which would be +4, +0, +2 for your F/M/T), then divide by 3. You might end up with 1 or 2 HP less than normal since IWD rounds down decimal points.
You can set the difficulty to Normal (the middle setting) to ensure getting your maximum HP for each lvl up.

Im still getting screwed then,
Fighter gets 14hp/level Mage gets 6 hp/level Cleric gets 10 hp/level Im getting 4 or 5 hp a level. Every time. I dont know how to get 4 or 5 from those numbers. You can also get max hitpoints per level by checking the option for it in the configuration screen. |

When you level up, chances are it's only in one class at a time. So you only get HP's for that class ie a max of 4 for the fighter, 2 for the mage and 3 for the cleric, if you round decimals down.
Its very rare that you will level up in all 3 classes at the same time so it feels like your being cheated, but you're not.

You should get the following BASE hit points per level from each class:
10/3 = 3.33 rounded DOWN to 3 4/3 = 1.33 rounded DOWN to 1 8/3 = 2.66 round down to 2 - (clerics get 8 hps per level, not 6) So that should give you 6 hit points when ALL three classes gain a level (not the 7 you should have calculated by adding 10+4+8=22/3=7.33 rounded down to 7). However, since each class will rarely level up at the same time as another (it does happen occassionally) you will likely only see a couple of hit points added each time you level up. I seem to remember reading that the Con bonus is not calculated the way you think it is. I'm trying to check it out so stay tuned for an update. I seem to recall that the Con bonus is applied based on the FIRST class to level up to a certain level and NOT distributed across ALL three levels based on the individual con bonus. I don't understand why you are only getting 4 or 5 hitpoints when all three classes level. Give me some specifics .... what levels has your character made and how many hitpoints does he/she have so far?

I checked with a couple of friends on the Con bonus issue. Here's what we think ...
The Con bonus is either applied based on the FIRST class to reach a specific level OR the highest con bonus for ANY class in the multi-class character; but it is not calculated based on the average of all classes. But we still can'[t figure out why you are only getting 4 or five hps per level UNLESS you have already gone past level 10 in all three classes.

Just because some watery tart lobs a scimitar at you, does not make you king.
